The ends of the springs should be rotated such that they are snug against the "Stop" in the spring perch, Top AND Bottom.
They are stiffer, so they won't drop 1.25", more like .75-1", but 5/16ths is odd.
Look at the very end of the spring coil. it should be as deep in the perch as possible, and against the "Notch"(For lack of a better way to describe it) in the perches. The spring should be rotated as far counter-clockwise, (From the top, if I recall correctly) as possible.
EDIT!!!! MAKE THAT CLOCK_WISE from the top. I just went and looked.
