I actually only have about $20-25k. Which isn't that bad to go racing. I am on a REALLY tight budget, so I've pinched pennies EVERYWHERE that I could. Almost everything that I have is used. Which makes it even more impressive that I have been able to finish where I have. Now if I were to move up a class (Instead of running the Crate Motor class), and I were to buy everything new...Chassis and Motor it would be close to $60k. That's not including a nice diesel truck and a 32' enclosed trailer.
When we used to race (before everyone's retirement) in 2003 we had 2 cars, 3 engines, a 32' enclosed trailer w/ pretty much a full shop inside, and a Ford E-350 box van with a crew sleeping compartment and storage area. I'd say all of that was probably around $160k or so.

We had really good sponsors then though. It's definately not a cheap hobby.
Here are the 2 cars that we had at the same time and a shot of the trailer

And here's a pic after the car got tore up and all of the decals weren't back on it yet, but I think it looks pretty cool anyway
