A pressure gauge and bottle heater are very necessary for consistent nitrous usage. If you've got a proper blowdown setup, how is that sort of explosive damage going to happen? Those pictures are obviously the result of someone not using proper safety protocol - as mentioned, welding the cap shut and leaving the bottle heater on and hooked up to a constant 12v source. Sure, that sort of explosion could happen, but that guy brought it on himself by doing those things.
