If you could fit a replacement into the box, you would be modifying a "non-serviceable" part, thus making it illegal by the rules. According to the rules, you either leave the filter as is, or you go to the next class, being STS.
By the way, the way that these airboxes are constructed and situated, I would assume that even if you did manage to hack open the box, replace the filter with something that you would have to guess on (since there is no direct replacement you would have to measure and /or guess at the actual size), then reseal the entire system (again, illegal by the rules you are trying to follow), I would assume you would have a very, very minimal gain, if any at all.
