Fuel Pump - Focaljet

Hi,

So you guys offer a 2003 Focus fuel pump as an upgrade to my 2001 ZX3 FI? Do you modify it at all besides brand new OEM?

Does it come with anything else besides the canister/top? I guess I have to break out the retaining ring in my fuel pump but is there a new one you send?

What are the details of the modification? I have the old pump out and I want to make sure I get everything right the first time.

How much horsepower will this pump provide? I am going for 20-25 psi with an 8:1 compression ratio is this my best option?

Any other things I should know? Any words of advice?

The retainer ring has to be removed for the pump to sit flat on the bottom. And there is not retainer ring for the new one, it has a spring-loaded top that holds everything in place. In terms of power, that all depends. Some of us are making 300 on the pump, and others are making over 350 (most with the Boost-a-pump)

The pump we sell is good for 400whp. Unfortunately, we do not have any details as to the installation procedure on earlier models. We will have it figured out just as soon as we can get our hands on a '03+ tank.

I have an 03 Focus fuel pump in my posession now. I see how it has 2 clips on its side to hold it to the bottom but there is nothing for it to clip too once I remove the retaining ring. Is there another piece I need to do this?

If I return that pump and get your will it come with whatever it needs to clip it to the bottom?

Our fuel pump is not a complete kit as of yet. We're trying to find out exactly what it takes to properly retrofit that pump but have not been able to get an '03+ tank yet.

OK please keep this thread updated very interested I was dynoing yesterday and I did 100% duty cycle on my stock 01 pump at 5k rpms and 12 psi limiting me severly to 210.

I recieved a fuel tank from an 03 focus from FocusSalvage. I inspected the inside and this if what I found(no pics unfortunately)

Instead of the ring it has it has like a cup. The cup is about as tall as the fuel pump and the pump just clicks into it with the tabs on the top. It has a hole on the side so the fuel pickup can stick out but when installing the fuel pump you have to make sure the pickup isnt jammed below the fuel pump.

It looks like it would be preety hard if not impossible to install an 03 pump into an earlier tank it just doesnt have the right "cup".

You beat us to it! Is the "cup" glued to the tank? Dealers somehow upgrade earlier tanks to the late style setup. I wonder if Ford has a part number for the cup only or the fuel pump with cup. Probably the cheapest thing to do is what you did. Thanks for the info!

From Ford there is no way to upgrade other than using the correct tank and pump together. Ford does not sell any seperate part of the tank or pump.

I don't know how difficult it would be if it would even be posible to just use the pump motors in the different housings.

It's very common for Mustang guys to use Focus pump motors in Mustang pump housings and even Ford GT pumps in Mustang and Cobra setups, The pumps motors are all virtually the same size but differ in areas like the wiring connections and the actual fuel pickups.

You may want to look in that direction and see if you can make that work.

I know "Professorblinks" was playing around with these setups but it might not hurt for someone else to play with it.

Hey,

I believe the recall setup, though I have never seen it, is a completely different canister from the 03 pump. It is held down by a spring loaded top so all you have to do is cut off the old ring. There is a "kit" that the ford dealerships use to do the recall, it involves a tool to cut the ring out among other things I'm not sure of. It is NOT the 03 pump canister and I dont believe it will improve fuel flow performance that FI groupies are looking for.

The Ford GT fuel pump will not work in any focus canister AT ALL. The output port on the pump itself is shaped narrower and longer than the stock Focus one.

Switching the pump motors inbetween years looks possible but I dont think it will make much of a difference. The big thing is that the older canister uses a fuel pickup mounted on the bottom wheres the newer one is mounted on the side. I believe (I could be wrong) that the extra flow is from the intake redesign.

The 03 cup appears to be "glued" to the tank or mounted however the old ring was. "FordSVTParts" and I have come to the conclusion that it is IMPOSSIBLE to put an 03 canister into an 00-02 tank.

After dealing with this problem for so long I have come to 2 solid conclusions. The first is that the easiest way and OEM way is to just swap out an early tank with an 03 zetec fuel tank assembly from a salvage yard.

***It is very hard to find a salvage yard that will ship a fuel tank due to fuel vapors being present in the tank***

The second conclusion is that the most cost effective way to get 500 hp out of the fuel pump would be switching to a return setup. You would use the EVAP line for the retun, have to fab up an in-tank return, and run AN fittings/lines to/from the firewall to a fuel rail with an aftermarket fuel pressure regulator and have an aftermarket fuel pump mounted in the tank but using the old canister with new internals looks possible.

[HINT]This would be a VERY good/profitable kit to offer[HINT]

Remember there are three parts to an engine. Air, Fuel, and spark. We are spending thousands on the air part, spark is sufficient for 500 whp, so all that is left is fuel. I would have rather spent a couple dollars to get a nice fuel system setup without all this hassle to match my built tranny, built engine, toms full kit, 3 vf mounts, ect.

I have an 03 tank in my posession ready to go into my car. Lets see if that is the limiting factor or if the octane is the last thing holding my car back (I "only" get 93 round here).

yes but the race pump will suck the canister dry and doesnt work well for car that do hard turns (autoX,ect) tom used this for drag racing but had to keep 1/4 at all times
