Cool Couple of questions

OK, i have a 2007 ZX3 with the 2.0 dura
1. has anyone put an under drive pulley in their's? did it make a diff? was it worth it? how hard was it if you did it yourself? any info or concerns i should know about?

2. i want to do a SHORT RAM, (i don't do CAI no more). has anyone built their own? i tried and it flicked on the engine light. i used all stock tubes (i cut the one with the MAF in half and used the side with the sensor for).

advice please

1. Several people have done it. However it isn't worth the money. They are a pain to put on and they don't over much gain

2. I would do a search for the "Stealth Intake" if you want to make your own. However you can usually pick up good deals on used intakes. Not to mention the intake is the biggest bang for your buck, so you want to make sure you get it right.

major no-no on cutting the maf tube in half...that is a huge part in how the ecu determines fueling and basically everything else...you could be running extremely rich or worse off, lean because of that. the airflow across that sensor needs a certain diameter and length to determine the correct engine parameters. I would try your hardest to find a new maf tube and just buy a known good product!!! (this is why almost all aftermarket intakes reuse the stock maf piece)

The underdrive pullies are fine just make sure someone that knows what they are doing installs them. Duratecs don't have keyed crank/crank pulley so you can actually have the crank move if it isn't properly secured. If you install it improperly, you will have valve/piston clearance issue. Run it in this condition, kiss it goodbye.

You shouldn't have to but the MAF. For my first intake, I took a filter and got a piece of steel exhaust pipe expanded to snuggly fit inside the filter's rubber boot (very snuggly!). After this, a ring just the width of the boot was cut off and pushed into the boot.

I then used a 3in (I believe) rubber plumbers 90 degree elbow. It fit right over the filter and tighted down (with no problems) and then went right over the bottom of the MAF. Prolly $15 not including the filter.

do you have any pictures of the custom intake? so is it worth spending 200 or more on cold air intakes?

Doing a CAI setup is one of the biggest gains as far as bolt ons go that you can do. I would look at getting a used CAI there are a bunch around on the forums. That way you get a good setup and don't have to spend a bunch of money

Unfortunately, no pics. I have a Marcy CAI on my car at this time.

For a cheap intake otherwise, search the for sale section on here and the other focus site.

i didn't cut it the long way. the diam was the same. i used a rubber adapt from my old intake from my 01 to put it back, untill a deer happened. now it's all new.

i'm looking for good cheap mods. it's all stock and i use it for work. i just want some more bang and not affwct my fuel econ or dig to far into anything.

i modded my intake/fuel/exhaust on my 01 and i got worse econ, but i did get some bang though.

the under drive pull looks like you get more hp sooner for longer. that's kinda whay i'm looking for. but it is a like $130 mod

if you want to make your own for a dura. go here and just mimic it. looks like a simple design http://focussport.com/coolflo.htm

i'm pretty sure steeda makes a short ram intake for the duratec. i have the FS cool flo and well worth every penny. On my 04 2.3L i had the Marcy motorsport and they were both good pieces and def woke the engine up. People like steeda and focus sport do this stuff for a living, so I personally leave the engineering up to them. they test the hell out of everything before it sells. You honestly prob just jacked the maf tube all up by cutting it however. you might be lucky, not sure though.

Oh no, I know the cams and rotating assemlbly can be otherwise locked, I was more complaining about the lack of a keyed crank.

If one wasn't installing a pulley, it is easy to just lock the crank pulley (for cam replacement, etc.). Otherwise you can lock the flywheel, cams, and there is a place to stop the crank from moving with a well placed bolt into the block as I understand.
