Default Euro Spec tails - MADE SIMPLE!!

First, let me say I did a lot of reading and it was almost 100% useless to me, so let me break it down...

1) Remove panels, carpet, sub box, etc. to make access to the drivers side quarter panel (in the trunk). You will see two plugs, a gray and blue.

2) In the blue plug is a green/ black wire - cut it after the plug. Thats for reverse and you wont need it for the tails (you will need it when you add a lower mount reverse light later).

3) Remove tail lights.

4) At the gray plug, find the green/ yellow wire, splice in and add TWO long sections of wire. Run each wire to the tail lights. I make a small hole in the rubber grommet with the tail light harness (under the tail light that is now removed). Run your wire out to each light.

5) On the tail light plug, cut the blue wire. Make sure you leave as much room as possible to splice the blue wire later.

6) The wire you ran to the tail lights goes to the SOCKET SIDE of the blue wire. You now have parking lights/ brake. Do this for each side.

7) Now, at the two pin reverse plug, cut the green/ black wire and use some spare wire to exten a wire between the green black wire from the socket to the blue wire you cut in step (5).

8) You now have independant turns.

9) Next, on the brake/ park socket, cut some of the twist locking tabs off until the socket fits into the euro light. It wont fit perfect, but it'll go in place and mont pop out. When you put the light in, the body of the car will limit movement. For the turn socket, the euro hole is too big so you can just stick the socket in and let it chill, or get a euro blub holder, and modify your US plug to plug in. All you have to do is cut away the black outer part so you just have pretty much the white square with nothing around it. Then, it just slides right in place. Holds just fine.

Thats it....all you have to do is run ONE wire...not a wire from the front, or anything else. Everything is done at the very back.

NOW! If you want to keep your US lights and go euro turns....do all the above mentioned stuff (sockets dont need to be modified, obviously) and just add an amber blub in place of the clear reverse blub. FREE EURO LIGHT MOD!!! Your reverse light (clear lens) will now blink as a turn signal. and the red part will serve as your brake/ park light.

..and there you have it.

Sticky? Yes? I mean, its a free euro light mod!

As we chatted about in PMs keep in mind that 00-01 02 and 03 are all prett different back there. So I would point out this works for 02 but may not work for others. I'm not really sure. I'll get in the back and look at mine tonight. If I could do away with that wire I had to run the whole way back I'd be a happy man. First vote for sticky, glad it worked out for you man :-)

Unfortunatley its not as simple as you've made it seem. Not all Foci are the same in regards to wiring. Lots of us that have done the mod had to hunt down a single red wire that splits into two and figure out which one to cut in order for the mod to work properly.

THIS DOES NOT NEED A STICKY!!!!! You could have just used the exterior HOW TO's AND EVERYTHING EXTERIOR post that is stickied at the top of the forum. I contributed to a nice write up that is in there and has been for almost 3 years now and has helped MANY convert their stock tails to operate Euro Style.

I only had to cut the blue wire and join that with the green black...

Dude, it was highly simple...

I think any advice is worth contributing to the uber sticky. The more advice and options the better. As I'm sure alot of us have learned there is no single right way as the models differ so much. I don't see how it could hurt adding it.

I did EVERYTHING at the light. I saw how-to's saying run lights from the grille, etc. All I did was run a single wire to each light, and then transfered a wire. Im sure its the same (as long as you have those two plugs in the rear 1/4 panel) for the most part with a diff in wire color.

Wiring is my forte and I knew Id find a simpler way to do it.

E-Spec or E-coded headlights > this cheap mod

This cheap mod however is a "nice" alternative to those who want to keep the DOT-approved tailights.

I have E-Spec lights....

....I was simply saying you could do it the free way.

Man, you guys really hate when people that arent "in the circle" do a how-to. I'll keep my info to myself from now on. People can figure it out, just like I did.

We do appreciate your effort very much!!!
At least I do!
I'm still sitting on the fence about the mod because of all the confusion thanks to the differences in wiring among the '00, '02 and '03 models.
What year is your car?
Is it 2002?

BTW, does anyone know if there is a how-to out there written for a '00-'01 Focus?
I'd hate to have to cut wires without being absolutely sure what I'm doing.

The write-up that I contributed to was for a 2000 ZX3. You can read it by looking through the sticky at the top of the EXTERIOR forum.

And again.... DONT THINK THAT JUST BECAUSE ONE PERSON DID IT EASILY YOU CAN DO THE SAME!!!!

The wiring for the ZX3 changed throughout the years and the method that this guy uses WILL NOT work on a 2000 ZX3 (maybe the 2001 also)

Tobyboom, call me stupid, but I still can't find your write-up!!!
I've searched through the sticky at the top of the exterior forum.
I've found two how-to's on ZX3 taillights - by 02smurf and Peterbilt, both for the 2002'-up.
Would you please point me towards your write-up.
Thank you.

His thread isn't in the sticky. That thread was lost with a TON of other ones when the forums were redone....I searched for hours trying to dig back a lot of them but couldn't find most, which is why the new threads are in its place....

Yes, I have an 02...

It would be the same as long as there is a three way buld for the brake/ park/ turn (3057 Bulb). For best bet, splicing the 3rd brake instead of the green/ yellow at the 1/4 panel would net the same results. Switching the outside wire (black - GND/ Orange/ wht - PARK and Blue - Turn) (Blue is the one you cut, tap the socket side to the wire from the 3rd barke light, and the car side of the blue taps to the harness with the reverse light; cut and splice the blue from the car side tot he socket side of green black). The ONLY thing that should change is the colors, if that.

Well, why dont you go the the junk yard, find a 2000 ZX3 and try it your way then. Since you are basically calling those of us that did this mod YEARS ago liars, I'd like you to prove yourself. I have no doubt that it might have been that easy on your car, but I am just letting everyone know that its NOT that easy on earlier cars. The wiring going to the back of the car is physically different.

Dude, Im not calling anyone liars. Oh my god. Why dont you relax a little. Im saying there's got to be a simpler way. Id love to get ahold of an older ZX3 and poke around and find the easy way. I used to do wiring for a living - I used to tear cars apart and play with wiring.

Forget it....someone delete this thread please, its upsetting Tobyboom. Everyone can just use the write up he and the others did YEARS ago since thats the only acceptable way to do it.

If you were to do the euro mod for US Spec Tail Lights and ADDED a second socket for reverse bulbs you would be SET !!

Then You have the Euro Hotness and the Reverse lights to boot.

Opened it back up...Lets keep this informative. We already have established the wiring and/or wiring colors are different between model years. Please post your method and your model year. We don't need to find a universal method because obviously that isn't going to work. If this turns into a debate again it'll be closed, loses productivity at that point.

Great.
So far I was able to find a few how-to's for the 2002-UP Foci models.
Mine is a MY'00.
As I understand the early how-to's have been lost in the process of migrating to the new board software.
I wonder if there is anyone out there who's in the process of performing or getting ready to perform the mod on that particular model year.
Would you please take notes (preferably with pics) and write up a how-to.
Or maybe someone can point me to an existing MY'00 how-to I'm not yet aware of.
I'm obviously very bad with the wiring stuff or I woudn't be asking for it otherwise.
Thank you.

I'm hoping that the wiring for the '00 isn't too bad at all, because I would love to swap over to E-spec tails on my early '00
