Default The trials and Tribulations of Buying a Euro Bumper

I really wanted to throw this out there so that anyone who is considering this modification for their car won’t have to go through the run around that I did.

For those of you who don’t know me, I own a 2001 Egg-Yolk Yellow ZX3 that I am in the process of doing an ST170 exterior conversion on. With the lights and grille already swapped and rewired, I have come down to the biggest exterior modifications that go with that package; the front and rear bumpers.

The rear bumper is priority #1 right now as I need to have that completed before my cars inspection is up in October, on account of the fact I have no reverse lights at the moment.

First place I looked for the ST170 Euro bumper was the obvious “site-we-don’t-name” (still?) but that idea was kind of blown out of the water by the fact that, at its current state, the dollar is almost useless in purchasing anything straight from Europe. I had priced out my parts from that site about a year ago, and magically, the price for the same parts jumped about $200 US dollars in that time span.

Next I called BAT; British American Transfer, based in Florida. I asked the gentleman there about a possible special order on an ST170 rear bumper because I knew that they had both the RS and ’98 Euro bumpers listed in their catalog. He (Eric) was a great help, but informed me that BAT had tried importing that bumper in the past but ran into troubles with the ancillary pieces that came with it (i.e. the trim molding and tow hook cover); seems that Ford Europe readily shipped the bumper cover, but took their sweet time sending the other little bits. And that in turn cause problems at BAT because no one wanted to pick up an order that wasn’t all there, so the expensive special orders just sat in the warehouse gathering dust until Ford Europe got its act together. It made sense, and Eric said that because of that they no longer accepted orders for that bumper kit.

Boy did I think I struck out there….

….BUT. Eric says. If I wanted JUST the bumper cover, and I felt that I could find the ancillary pieces on my own, they would do it. So of course I was like, wait… what? I told him that I would see what I could do and get back to him.

So I wrote the owner of the “site-we-don’t-name” and inquired about just the trim and tow hook cover. He said sorry, but they didn’t break up the kits. Ok.

Hopped on ffoc.co.uk (that is another great group of Focus owners BTW) and asked in their for-sale/ wanted section if anyone had the bits I was looking for. Pretty sure it was almost instantaneously, I get a message from Tezza, the resident UK parts guru. Says he’s helped other guys in the states get parts. He was an enormous help, let me to you. Got me a quote for the 4 pieces I need, shipping price and BAM. Paypal and en route to the states.

Great, I thought, one step closer.

Called Eric at BAT back and said I had the other parts nailed down and I’d take the bumper cover. He asked me then if I had a commercial address to ship to, as the freight company tended to charge a little more for residential shipping. Talked to my boss at work and he said sure, no problem. Tacked the bumper foam and some sockets for the reverse lights I have onto the order. BAMx2

Done. Billed when product ships.

So I have all the parts for my ST170 bumper on the way within the next month. Not in time for Carlisle, but plenty of time for my fall inspection.

So that’s my story and I’m stickin to it. If you want a new model Euro bumper relatively hassle free talk to Tezza at ffoc.co.uk for the trim (he can get either the black or paintable) and tow hook cover and give BAT a call and speak with Eric for the bumper cover. They’ll hook you up.

Tezza has been key in getting most of my Euro parts, too. He's been a great help, although at times a bit flaky in getting back to you.

In retrospect, someone is selling a complete rear bumper with foam and crash bar... or is that not the correct style you're looking for?

Nope, I curse the fact that I'm anal about completing a 'look' otherwise I'd probably be fine with picking up the '98 style rear that he's selling. But I want my black trim to wrap all the way around so I went for the 2002/ST170 style rear.

How much did you end up paying for the bumper and extra parts after shipping?

I feel your pain. I am doing an ST170 conversion as well. I have a friend in the UK forwarding the parts to me. I was scammed on ebay.co.uk from a seller with 2000+ feedback that seemed safe when ordering the front bumper . I had to do a charge back through paypal which took 4 weeks. I finally got the money back and ordered another which arrived at the UK address in 2 days. They shipped the euro 98 bumper instead of the ST/2002 one. It is getting returned next week and supposedly they will refund the shipping charge and send the correct one out.

I believe I paid more for the ST170 grille than I did for the bumper cover. It took forever to hunt down the 2002 glass fog light bezels for a decent price. I had no real issues with getting the front trim pieces. However, I can not locate the factory front lip anywhere. I haven't had any luck with the front tow eye cover either. I bought the rear bumper painted black with all lights and trim installed from a wrecked car in London so that has the tow eye cover installed.

I am hoping to get everything here, together and painted before FOTB.

Good luck with your conversion.

Here are some of my parts sitting in the UK....

About $600 for everything. That's
bumper cover,
crash foam,
3 trim pieces,
tow hook cover,
2x bulb sockets,
2x plug connectors,
reverse + fog light,
+shipping

You need the crash bar, too; unless you're having a shop cut and reweld yours.

Now that is where I've gotten a lot of mixed answers. Some people I've talked to who have done this conversion say its not necessary to do anything with the rebar, and some people say you do

I would go with the people who've actually done it then.

Do the rebar! The first euro bumper i had on my old car i did without the rebar. Then i got rear-ended by a guy going, maybe 10 miles an hour, tops. Totally screwed the bumper and actually put a few kinks in the floorboard. If he had been going faster, it would have been catastrophic.

The second euro rear i got, i made sure to do the rebar. Next accident i got rear ended by a guy going maybe 40-50 and the rear floor was fine.

Moral of the story: if you have any way to possibly get the rebar, do it!

Whats the different between the ST170, the Euro, and the RS rear bumpers? And I know it should be asked in interior thread but where can I get the ST170 gauge face, it glows blue right?

Ask in the Interior Forum.

The RS rear bumper is wider to accomodate the fender flairs.

The ST170 apparently has a slightly different trim than the standard Euro bumper.

There is no way to use the NA rebar with a euro rear bumper and there is no need for the foam without the rebar.
If you can weld, or know a welder, you can possibly cut off the mounting brackets for the NA rebar and make your own bar.

Best thing, find a euro bar.

Blue? Don't know about that. As far as I knew the ST170 gauge face was the same as the SVT one; indiglo and green. Interior forum would know better.

as for the bumpers heres a little comparison chart;
MK1 bumper with black plastic rear apron and no molding

MK1 RS 'Collection' (not widebody) bumper

MK1 RS bumper (widebody)

Mk1 'facelift' (2002 model year) bumper with colored rear apron and black trim molding

Mk1 ST170 bumper is the same as the 2002 only with color coded trim molding.

I personally like the black trim molding because I plan to leave the door molding on my car alone and not paint it. So technically, I am installing a 2002 Euro bumper

Hope that helps!

Now when you change the bumper do you have to modify the exaust tip? or will it fit?

Yeah same thing. US bumpers are longer to accomodate crash standards. The RS bumper is also wider; it's a whole different animal. If you're going to use any RS body panel, you'll need to use them all.

The only reason I asked that is because in your pics the gauge is white with blue lights with ST170 on the gauge

Correct, the Collection bumper is not wider, just shorter.

Slip has Speedhut gauge overlays installed in his cluster. You can have them made with custom logos and choose the lighting scheme... in his case he got the ST170 logo and blue lighting.

The stock ST170 gauges look just like the SVT ones, except they have the ST170 logo.
