Default Replacing Side Mirror

Had a deer hit my driver's side mirror when I went backpacking a week ago. The mirror was torn from the car and the glass pieces showered me and my passenger. (We're fine, I know you're concerned) I now need to replace the whole mirror assembly. I haven't done this before but have a complete replacement from an auto-salvage on its way here in a few days. How do I get the old plate off and get access to the bolts to put the new one on?

Definitely look to get your hands on a thin and powerful magnet (I have a magnet attachment for my screwdriver that works wonders). That bolt in the door is a P.I.T.A.

oh oh I was stupid and bought myself aftermarket mirrors for my birthday... and uhhhh well the bolts felt like they fit I pulled out the socket and THUNK into the door the bolt went. with the plastic that was SUPPOSED to hold the mirror onto the car. NICE. Ford was nice enough to get the bolt for me since it was at their shop yesterday to get the airbags fixed... aftermarket mirrors suck I was so excited to get them too

Can't you just pull the door panel off and grab it?
