// What It Is: The Massive MSX 90 Performance Ignition Package is an upgrade that replaces the key components of your car's ignition system. The heart of the package is a 40,000 volt, high-performance coil pack. It provides improved materials and windings over the OEM unit. The coil pack is paired with a set of Massive's low-impedance spark plug wires. Together they produce a stronger spark, which will improve your idle, provide more mid-range power and possibly give you slightly better fuel mileage.
// Hits: The components in this package were of a very high quality, which included a genuine MSD coil pack. The substantial 90 series wires have a 1200 Degree glass-impregnated outer layer and look like they are more than up to the job, with extra thick boots that should provide years of trouble-free performance. The wire's color, red in our case, was very vibrant and really brightened up the engine bay too. The kit comes with all the necessary hardware, along with detailed, easy-to-follow instructions.
The little things, such as numbered wires, and the addition of a small tube of dielectric grease shows that the guys at Massive know how to do it up right. We were also happy to find an extra little surprise in the box, in the form of a Foglight Mod jumper kit. A nice touch! The wires also come with a limited lifetime warranty, so you can rest easy that Massive's got your back incase something goes wrong with them down the road.
// Misses: It's difficult to find a miss with this product. However, the boots are a very tight fit on the coil pack. So we suggest you trial fit them before you bolt the pack into place, just to make sure everything will go together smoothly. That's not really a miss, you want them to fit tight. But we found ourselves wishing we'd gotten familiar with the MSD-style boot/tower connection before bolting down the coil pack with thread locker.
The MSD-style boot clips are good, providing an extra degree of safety to keep the boots in place. But make sure the boot is fully seated to engage the clip under the lip on the tower. Also take care not to be too rough with the boot clips. We managed to snag one and broke off one of the "ears", although that didn't affect the ability of the clip to do its job.
// The Verdict: Massive has done their homework in putting this package together. It provides a substantial upgrade over the OEM ignition system and adds a bit of color that will jazz up any bland engine bay. After installation we really did notice a smoother idle. It also seemed to smooth out the slight, steady-state throttle "surge" that many modified Zetecs seem to suffer. Our "butt dyno" felt that mid-range torque on our supercharged car was a bit stronger as well. If you have basic modifications done to your car you should take a look at this kit. And, if you are running any sort of forced-induction or nitrous, we would highly recommend it.
