Default Need help with route

So I'm planning our route to FOTB and it's pretty easy all the way to Barstow. I-40 all the way.

Here's the thing.........what will be the best route from Barstow to Goleta on that Friday? Hopefully we will make it to Flagstaff on Thursday and then leave Flagstaff Friday morning around 7am. Knowing traffic in SoCal, what is the best route to take to avoid as many traffic slow downs as possible?

Here's the route that Google gives:

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&sadd...234,8.4375&z=7

Now, I think I remember going through Lancaster and Palmdale on the way in to FOTB 06, and we missed any major issues, but I don't remember the route too well.

I don't care if the route is a bit longer, I just don't want to ride my clutch on those hills in bumper to bumper traffic.

I just posted a link in another FOTB thread lolz

Don't go 138 because it's under construction and it SUCKS if you get stuck behind a rig - nowhere to pass! This way is 15 miles longer but lets you avoid LA altogether, and mostly goes against traffic/the Friday Getaway.

I was just on 138 from the 15 to Palmdale on the way back from Utah. If you take the 15 to the 18 then to 138, you're avoiding 95% of the construction. Its all on 138 South of the 18 junction... so no biggie.

Also, technically, 58 takes you almost 45 minutes out of your way. And lately, I've noticed that the trucks on 58 are pretty bad.

Ah very cool. Last time I was on 58 there was literally no one else on it except for a few trucks. But it was the middle of the week in the morning, so go figure.

I wanna do 85 every time I'm on 58. It's so hard to do the speed limit, and between 99 and I5 it is so long and flat the cops can see you two miles away.

Last time I came through there after Barstow, there was some kind of ginormous transport plane doing touch-and-go exercises by Edwards, and he was flying so low to the ground I could almost see the pilots. It was rad. I was going about 55 just to check things out.

Oh I love it.......*I* better not get *US* lost.

Good thing I've made this trip a few times and also have a TomTom to bring along as well.

We'll get there, but we might make a detour towards Phoenix on Thursday night. I got an invite to crash at one of the Dez's pads and to drive in with them on Friday. It makes for a longer drive on Thursday, but no motel room to pay for Thursday night and a nice caravan in on Friday.

Caravan's always make the drive shorter

On the way to HRK's wedding, I followed Lorin down the PCH. The scenic route was ~ an hour longer. I took the not-so-scenic route home and it felt twice as long. It didn't help that my exhaust was like 105 dB

I just made a round trip drive to vegas last week and the 58 was a breeze. The first time I drove through it was early Thursday, I drove back Sunday evening. The road was in fairly good condition and I didn't see one cop until I was close to Bakersfield. The only area of the 58 where it is a little bottlenecked is the area right around where the 395 meets it @ Kramer Junction. When you do go that way though, make sure to go slow over the train tracks on the West side of that intersection because it's quite a bump.

Take that option. The 17 is absolutely AWESOME to drive down through the Verde Valley.

Nick, I'd say take the 58 if they were gonna go to SLO.... but not to get to SB.... Like I said... outta the way by about 30 minutes.

Oh. Phok. Yes.

We did that on our way to Sedona for the honeymoon. It's sofa king beautiful through there

The scenery will make up for the long drive, for sure!

I've heard about 17, but have never driven it. It has definitely been added to the 'roads must travel' list.

Well, now that I think about it, CA17 is another fun one

They'll be coming down the 17 pretty late in the evening so they wont be able to see much of the scenery. But the drive is fun, lots of good corners. The speed limit is 75 most of the way so it goes by quick. The big shocker is that you drive through Flagstaff and it will be 70 degrees and by the time you get into Phoenix it will be 110.

Okay, Sonic's ready. In the last week I did a fuel filter change, coolant flush, plus I just finished clay baring and waxing Sonic.

Now it's just a waiting game until we leave. The next 12 days will be LOOOOONNNNNGGGG..........
