Here are some Focus Concept pics I found while rumaging through my old car mags. The first set of pictures were printed in October 1996, the front shot was from a mag dated September 1997.

wow, quite interesting. i like the assembly of the latter headlight, but i don't like the shape. would have loved to have seen that assembly put into the final production focus. that would've been quite nice.

I was looking for an article that I remember where a magazine got its readers to vote which rear end they prefered for the "new escort". There was a picture of the Focus as it is now, and a more toned down conservative version (probably similar to the 4th picture down that I posted here). I remember being totally shocked by the focus design at the time, and thinking that Ford would never have the guts to put it into production! Anyway, I couldn't find that article...
