Default CA to PA - A Focus Odyssey

So... since my trip to Oktoberfest in Germany has all but fallen through the cracks I've decided to try to make it out to FR'12 with my vacation time instead.

I live in Fresno, CA so it takes me nearly 6 hours of driving just to get out of the state! This is going to be a long trip

First things first, I'll need a route.

Next, I'm not doing this drive alone, who else is down to go?

Third, I know Jason has made it out to FOTB twice before you better believe there are going to be some of you coming out to CA.

With that, I need suggestions, comments, accusations, paternity tests, and whatever else you think will help me get there.

    I must be nuts.

this should be epic... how much time do you/will you have? It would be tubular *i say that because your from california* if you stopped by peoples cribs on your route on the way and made it a giant focus chain-gang down the highway on your way to fr11. If you traveled through ohio id meet up with you to go. obviously its not as far for me as it is for you lol.

Epic nick. If I was on the west coast I'd drive with ya but I'm not. I better be seeing you at fr12.

I have a house in Las Vegas so I will more than likely stay the night there the night before my days off would officially begin.

I think it's time to drum up the Stay with a Jetter thread.

Man Nick, thats a mighty voyage!

Staying in Vegas, while economical, will set you back an hour or two on your journey if your planning on going on the southward path I-40. Making the haul across I-40 many times between Cali and the likes of OKC, i can tell you that it is a BORING ass drive. Sure there are some nice scenery, but after hour upon hour of that same nonsense, lets just say falling asleep at the wheel is quite common on that stretch.

If i were you, i'd go I-40 as far as you can into Arizona or New Mexico and make that your first stop. From there you can get to Tulsa or OKC on day 2 to meet up with any other potential FR'12 amigos. After that, im lost But at least it gives you an idea of the kinds and lengths of driving stints you'll have to do in order to make your vacation not last a month, lol.

    Good luck my friend!

I want in on this! I wouldn't want to make the trip alone incase of break downs. But I really want to do this.

    *Edit*

What about taking the northern route, 80?

The biggest issue I have with HWY-80 is the huge changes in elevation and the road itself.

    This brings a few concerns:

    1) Weather - Summer snow storms happen in the Sierras and Rockies

    2) Fuel Consumption - The long and short of it is more money in gas makes for less to spend on beer!

    3) Poor Road Conditions - Especially in CA and NV the 80 always seems to be in disrepair, groves the size of speedbumps will be more than just concerning

Now, don't get me wrong, I'd love to take that way for a few reasons: I've never been past Reno on that road, I'd like to drive through SLC to see NorCal's transplanted gypsy. I have really good friends up in Cody, WY that would be awesome to see. And I absolutely love driving through the mountains, and getting the chance to go thorugh both the Sierra Nevada Range and the Rocky Mountains all within two days would be epic.

The good thing is we've got time to figure it out.

Yeah thats why I was thinking 8- was due to SLC and the mountains. But the southern route will probally be the way to go.

Nick I drove from Detroit to Albuquerque in 24 hours straight, food & restroom stops only. I then went to Las Vegas, and then on to Los Angeles in 2003. I obviously took the low route, the old Route 66. Driving the mountain route was a concern on mine as well. I can say the the low route AZ, NM, TX, OK, MO, etc was problem free, traffic free except for I-94 south of Chicago. Not sure if the Oklahoma boys cut up to Chicago or cut lower through IL/IN. Traffic should not be really a problem south of Chicago unless they are doing construction. Figure Albuquerque to Toledo, OH is 22 hours of straight driving... Carlisle is 6 hours from Toledo.
