The SVT internals are a drop in replacement for the stock Zetec stuff... with no change in compression ratio... and a full list of the parts ive purcahsed and what I've spent to date is on the first page... I keep it up to date or try to anyways....

And now... without any more waiting... parts showed up today....

Engine Upper & Lower Gasket Sets

Oil Pump & MAF

Pile of other sensors

And as the motor sits now... with the headstuds installed ready for the head to be dropped on...

Just need a few more things I forgot to tell steve and I'll be good to go....

I'll keep you alls up to date as I get closer to my deadline.
Thanks

planning a high reving engine you will need to change bearing caps for heavy duty copper lead ones as this is the weak point of the block
the std svt pistons and rods good for 300bhp +
also i would sugest using a rs focus headgasket as they can take over 300bhp

^^Nah, you wont--plenty of people have made over 300whp on stock caps and bolts, but ARP makes some cap studs/bolts that I have for added insurance. You will, however, have to clearance your windage tray to fit past them IIRC.

its the svt focus the same as the uk st170 ?
as one of the problems listed was that the bearings was the weak link in the engine, the heads are very good conversion the the zetec motor as the valves and ports are much bigger.
read this info in fast ford as a few of the lads run turbo'ed st170's ,mind you they are running 8000rpm rev limt

Yeah plenty of things fail around 8,000rpms on a stock engine--from what I understand the oil pump goes anywhere 7,400rpm or above. The SVT head flows much better than the zetec because of the dual runner design, but a ported and polished ford racing zetec head and intake manifold will do fine as well. I haven't seen any issues with the main bearings on the zetec often. I'm running OEM replacements in mine, but clevite makes heavy duty and race bearings if you want peace of mind.

Hey alls...

Well... I'm using Clevite H series bearings, ARP main studs and factory caps (which the combo has been proven to hold 400whp... pushing past that area will require the use of aftermarket billet main caps.

I'll be running a factory head hella p&p'd by me... which should work fine considering there are several people who have netted 300+whp on a bone stock zetec head... and i'll be using the stock zetec hg and arp head studs.. so the cr is a bit more on the boost friendly side...

I wont be turning the motor past 7.2k rpm due to the risk of oil pump failure.. (with the billet replacement oil pump, ive seen the stock bottom end hold 8400rpm.. when they decided to stop pushing it because the car wasnt making any more power by turning it that high..)

anyways... the rest of the goodies will be here soon and the date is set... looks like its gonna be my cars 100k mile birthday gift.

thanks alls

Update....

Well... the motor swap has started... 2 weeks sooner then planned. I started having trouble with the current motor... ign. advance keeps dropping off and it wouldnt throw a code/CEL... so we arnt quite sure whats going on with it... so while it was down.. figured might as well start early.

pretty close to its 100k mile mark

limped it to the shop a few days ago

started pulling things apart... batt. box, reservoirs, and other things out of the way so the fun can really begin

most things out of the way... accessories... exhaust... still trying to figure out how to get the oil pan out without dropping the axle shafts

pile of parts...

how it sits for the evening... not bad for roughly 4hrs and minimal hand tools...

IIRC all I did to get my oil pan off was to drop the cat pipe out of the way and unbolt it all and just pry it off, slide it out of the way and it'll come out.

I know this is an old question but I didn't see it answered. They are called cracked rod caps and are designed that way. It is considered more accurate to score and break them then then to cut and machine them. The rough surfaces should mate up perfectly. The machined flat caps leave a big variable during assembly with rod bolt hole clearance. Also normal machining squareness issues can arise.

John had pm'd me the answer.. but its good to post it up here also...

as for pulling the oil pan and the alluminum piece between the block and the actual oil pan... the pass. axle shaft has a mount that bolts to it... and i cant move the axle shaft out of the way of one of the bolts that holde the alluminum piece on...

is there a way around it?

I was gonna say, you can pull the oil pan without pulling the aluminum skirt that the axle is attached to. You can unbolt that bearing or whatever is bolted to the aluminum skirt so that you can drop the windage tray out of the way...even to pull the axle you have to unbolt that IIRC.

one of the bolts for the windage tray is above the bearing piece and I cant get to it with the axle in place... but then again... I was tired and didnt feel like messing with it any more.

I got a little more done... not much though... the new motor and almost all of the parts are now at the shop and ready to go.... and I plan on having the old motor out and the new one ready to drop in by this weekend.

I'll keep you alls updated... I'm just hoping nothing fails during break-in.... ive heard too many horror stories... but I think everything should be good to go.

thanks for the input alls

its not the axle bearing bolt... ive got the bearing unbolted... its the bolt that holds the windage tray to the block that is directly above the bearing... and to access it... the bearing needs to be removed or so I think... and to get the bearing housing out of the way... it looked like i'd have to pull the axle shaft on the pass. side.

Default Re: Budget Turbo Build... From the ground up

Well... I would have had the car running today but ran into a few snags along the way....

We had the motor out of the car around 10am... but I made a little booboo when pulling the oilpan...

Snapped the friggen oil pick-up tube off... one of the few items that I didnt go on and order new.

As the day progressed.... we got the motor up and carefully out of the car...

We where able to keep the tranny and axles in the car and still had plenty of room to get the motor out from the top side... just took patience.... then bathed the engine bay in degreaser and hosed it down.

Started pullin the motor apart to swap over useable parts... the pile added up pretty quickly... sitting on the chair half asleep is a good friend of mine...

Took the head outside and degreased it... cleaned it up decently... and will be using it for the next couple thousand miles during break-in of the new bottom end while I port out the other head.

Bolted up the head and was ready to start re-installing all of the front engine pieces.....

Come to find out.... it came to a quick halt when we didnt have all of the gaskets we needed. The gasket that goes inbetween the waterpump housing and the block was missing from the engine gasket set from ford. Also realized that the early 2k intake manifold and the 2002 mani. use different gaskets... so everything came to a screaching halt. Called all the local dealers and noone had anything instock.

Anyways.... after 100k total miles... 20k of which where my miles... the motor still had the crosshatch in the cylinder walls... I was shocked...

Now I have another list of parts to overnight from Steve on monday... so this is how she sits until further notice.

We had plenty of time to get it done... but if something can go wrong... 9/10 times... it will.

I'll get back on track tues. or wed. hopefully... I'm crossing my fingers I can get the parts from Steve in time to get the car back together on Thursday.

Thanks guys

Default Re: Budget Turbo Build... From the ground up

question... has anyone deleted or modded the pcv can on the front of the block for more clearence? im affraid the exhaust housing on the turbo might come into contact with it.... but i dont have my turbo here yet to check for proper fitment.

Jayracing.com sells a plate that removes the baffle and puts plate in its place w/ a 3/8NPT tapped port to relocate the PCV system... but im not sure how to hook this up properly or how it would work...

anyone?

Thanks
