Default Re: Budget Turbo Build... From the ground up

well... from what I know... it was installed backwards... but SBC said they couldnt tell if it was or not... no odd wear patterns or anything... but anyways.. it wasnt the clutch's fault that I know of... it was installation error... and think.. this thing held up for 500miles in backwards... most of the time.. they fail almost instantly from what ive heard...

anyways.. they warranted everything but $85 of it... re-surfaced the flywheel again... and it should be on my door today... so i'll get it put back together hopefully by saturday... and get it back on the road yet again.

thanks guys

Default Re: Budget Turbo Build... From the ground up

checked the new clutch out... and from how the SBC labeled it.. i did not put it in wrong the first time... the hat/hub is pointed towards the flywheel on the ceramic material side... which i was told by many that the had/hub should go towards the pressure plate... but i put it back how it was labeled....

as for why it failed... well... i made an oops that may have led to its demise... i didnt happen to notice that when I pulled the ATX... that the tranny guide pins were stuck in the tranny and not the block... so the actual failure was most likely caused by tranny mis-alignment due to lack of guide pins.... which SBC said is the most likely cause aswell.

anyways... fixed that and the tranny is back in... will get it buttoned up this saturday and have it back on the road...

thanks again

That's awesome that it was warranted, and that you figured everything out. now you just need to make a road trip to california and let me drive it

Default Re: Budget Turbo Build... From the ground up

SOB!!! im getting really tired of this tranny swap project.... i seem to be having bad luck with SBC...

were to start...

I sent SBC my flywheel, pressure plate, clutch disk w/ pieces, and slave cylinder. They didnt re-turn the flywheel or the pressure plate because they said it didnt need to be done. They (Jon) also said they checked the pressure plate and everything was good to go. All they did was replace the metal disc while re-using my friction materials.... and said everything should be good.

I finished putting it back together today... took it for a drive and the clutch felt really funny.... so I stopped...

now... before it failed the first time... the clutch pedal would have to be depressed nearly 3/4 the way to the floor for the clutch to release.... now... with everything being the same... exept the disc.... i put my foot on the clutch pedal and might push it 3/4" - 1" before the clutch is fully released....

what in the world could be causing this besides the pressure plate being fudged? my main fear is that I might get 3k miles on the clutch before I have 0 free pedal play on the clutch and it just stops grabbing....

is there something that could have happend that wont require pulling everything back apart to fix? I have a feeling its the pressure plate... and im NOT paying for it this time.... im so p.o'ed at the moment....

other then that... it drives decent.... shifts smooth... and clutch opperation other then the fact that it takes nearly no movement of the clutch pedal to get the clutch to release... is glass smooth...

anyways... i dont know what to do...

Default Re: Budget Turbo Build... From the ground up

I contacted SBC again on friday... and they shipped me out a complete new clutch kit which will be here monday... tranny is on the ground again and awaiting its arrival... i think the problem is in the pressure plate and slave.... i found some metal shavings near the slave cyl. but couldnt find what they came from...

anyways... i should have the car back together by tuesday and hopefully can get a good amount of miles on the new clutch before i take the car on an 800mile road trip next week.... im debating on doing this... but it would be a nice break in trip for the clutch.... and i think what caused the failure in the first place was the lack of alignment pins... and i think the pressure plate failed also... but there was no evidence of it....

anyways... we'll see what happends... after this go round.. if everything goes smoothly... im gonna start working on my intercooler and piping... get the exhaust mocked up... but the turbo purchase will have to wait till early next year... currently.. i dont have $1k to drop on a compressor... but I will after tax time.. i'll let you alls know how things progress and keep you up to date... i did also get my alu. radiator installed and its working nicely... i'll get pics up of it later... currently my pc is down so i cant get on very often...

thanks guys

im starting to think the same thing... i probably just shouldnt risk it which sucks... but o well... my clutch should be here tommorow and if the flywheel turns out to be warped.. which i'll check tommorow... they can have me a new one by thursday... then everything would be new... but anyways... we'll see what happends i guess

Default Re: Budget Turbo Build... From the ground up

A couple updates....

once talking to SBC... they went on and sent me a new flywheel and complete clutch kit under warranty.... installed everything today... car drives amazingly smooth now... clutch engagement isnt snappy and harsh like it was the first go round... its smooth and when it does fully clamp... you feel it... ive got around 35 miles on it at the moment... and so far.. so good...

also changed out the el-cheapo oil for mobil1 and checked everything over... seems to be good once again... I guess the third times the charm on this deal... we'll see i suppose.

i'll have more updates later on... hopefully some pics... but im leaving for vacation tommorow... so it might be a bit...

thanks alls

everything is still holding together nicely... car is driving good... im starting to notice however that when driving hard... it doesnt want to drop into 2nd and most of the time... wont... so ive either got linkage out of adjustment or something internal which i hope not... when not driving hard.. it shifts fine... so i dont know...

any ideas?

Might be the synchros, but who knows. Try blipping the throttle a little bit when you are downshifting into second, rev matching makes a difference with mine in terms of smoothly shifting.

its not when downshifting... its going from 1st to 2nd... if i pull the car up in the 6.5-7krpm range... it doesnt always want to drop into 2nd... if i drive normally... it does fine...

any other thoughts?

could be a gradually loosening shift linkage or something, where it clips in underneath the center console toward the front. That's happened a couple times to me, and eventually it will pop out and really make itself noticeable, lol...

Well damn, at least you know how to install a tranny now with your eyes closed! Hope everything is fine now, I would hate to see you install another tranny...

Default Re: Budget Turbo Build... From the ground up

hey alls... been a long ass time since my last update... soo much has been going on with my house and stolen credit card info and work and.... its been interesting...

anyways... car is still running good... a few kinks here and there... but nothing major... clutch seems to be doing great now.... and ive put a few thousand on it so far without too many issues...

i did pick up some pieces to start fabbing my downpipe for the turbo... work had a few weldable close radius 3" stainless 90's with a little less then 1/8" wall thickness laying in the scrap pile... so the boss let me snag them.... if my measurements are correct... once i cut my angles on them... i'll be able to run the 3" dp and keep my ac... i'll make a bracket that will bolt to the block to help support the added weight of the thicker material... but it should make life much easier and reduce the amount of tig work i have to do greatly...

im gonna go 3" from the turbo... when i get under the motor... im gonna place a 3" Y piece... one of which will neck down to my 2.5" trubendz exhaust thats on the car now... the other side... will have a sealed electronic cut-out in place so with the flip of a switch... go to open 3" dp.... thats the plan anyways... we'll see if it works out that way...

i'll see if i can get some pics up of my pieces soon...

anyways... thanks for all the support on this long term project...

I swear.. I'm sitting here at work reading away (I get here at 6am, and noone gets going until about 9 or 930) and I was really quite depressed when I realized I'd reached the end of the article as it stands.. please, more updates.

That, and keep on modifying your setup.. I don't intend to copy any of it, but it's still fascinating and makes for a great read.

Sounds like you're getting to the last sections of this project. I hope it all works out well for you. I had an electric cutout on my car and it worked great until it took a crap on me. McCord power plates are decent as they have metal gears inside instead of plastic IIRC--being that close to the turbo the whole piece gets heat soaked pretty quickly and you don't want the motor to melt, lol

I was reading some were that the cutouts can harm HP in some setups due to making turbulence in the exh. Anyone else heard about this or read about it?

It can when the cutout is closed because the exhaust has nowhere to go so it hits the dead end inside the cutout and creates a weird swirl pattern there. When it's open I don't believe it causes any harm.
