Why does the exhaust piping go up in front of the fuel cell and then back down?

Probably clearance issues. Similar to my HKS exhaust hopping the rear frame.

Maybe its just the angle you are looking at it. It definatly looks bent. To me at least.

CaysE...it's just the angle...look at the right side piping...you can see that it makes a sharp turn up to allow room for the axle tubes.

Ah yes! I get it now. Damn camera tricks... it looks like a Y-pipe that goes up into the hatch area.

Because an exhaust that vents into the hatch area is always a good idea.

Did you see the Top Gear where they built auto-boats to cross the English Channel? They turned the truck, convertible, and VW van thing into .... uh, watercrafts... and he somehow routed the exhaust INTO the cabin of the VW motorhome and had to abandon.... uh, ship... b/c there was basically a lack of oxygen, lol...

Yes those bends in the exhaust is to clear the rear axle.
Here's the dyno video I said I'd post.

Motor sounds great! It sounded like the tires were spinning towards the top end of the pull or the motor flattened out towards 6000 RPM

I don't know about this particular Crate Motor, but a lot of crate motor's just have hydrolic lifters and a flat tappet cam, which in turn doesn't let the motor turn a lot of RPM's....so chances are, it was starting to float the valves around 6200-6500rpm.

It is a DOHC so probably would not valve float untill 7000. Sounded like a tuning thing or the dyno putting more load on the motor towards the top of the pull. But if it started to float you would have heard it. My 05' 4.6 would float at 6900 and it sounded like the top end of the motor was gonna let go at any moment. Plus the exhaust note would flutter.
