Tax season is coming in the near future again, and Ive been itching for the past 2 yrs to get boosted. But everytime I get ready to try, somethin breaks on my car again, and funds need to be diverted. Well, Im gonna try again.
I have a 2000 focus, zetec motor. I want a mild build, somethin that spools quickly for street use (and mtn treks)... 200-250hp. Somethin in that range. Dont want HUGE numbers. Heres the catch, my motor is gettin old. 163,000 miles old to be exact. So a few questions then... Is it safe to boost it the way it is now?(Low psi?) Or should I be lookin at a rebuild (or swap for a less mileage motor)... Cost is a factor. I know there are some really nice kits out there, but also come with a really big price tag. Any one have any luck w a pieced together kit? Im lookin at havin bout 2-3 G's to spend. Maybe more if I can scrape up some more hours at work. Lol Ebay. There are some universal kits on there for like 600 bucks. Obviously missing some things. But are the turbos reliable? Its just a T3/T04, but am i lookin down the wrong path there? Any help would be great guys. Walkin the path blind here, could use some light...

Since I assume this is your daily driver & with those miles on your motor I wouldn't turbo it unless you had enough money to do it right and enough left over in the bank to cover an engine replacement should anything happen.

Your best bet would be a used kit like a roush turbo kit or some form of supercharger with the tuning already included.
Boost is not cheap and cutting corners will only cost you in the long run. You will buy the cheap way now and end up replacing it with the right stuff later so you may as well go a head and buy the right stuff now. It adds up quick too. turbo 800 wastegate- 200 injectors 200 programmer 400 tune 400 (if you are lucky) thats 2 grand right there clutch 400 manifold 350 downpipe 200 intercooler 150 Thats over 3 right there and is not even close to complete. once you figure everything up you need to budget at least another $300 for all the stuff you forgot. I bet I've got 10k under my hood and i'm still not done. In my opinion if you don't have 4500-5000 to spend look for a used kit or don't bother at all.

Truth. When my kit is all done, including clutch and LSD install, I'll be at $10k. Granted I bought lots of extra gadgets, but even so, it ain't cheap!
