Default Mazda to offer three 6s: Flagship flies as sedan, wagon, hatchback

From Automotivenews.com:

LOS ANGELES - Mazda North American Operations will launch a three-pronged attack on the mid-sized sedan segment next year, even though it will replace the aging 626 and upscale Millenia with a single entry, the 6.

Dealers said last week that the 6 will come in sedan, hatchback and station wagon versions, where the 626 is a sedan only, and that the Millenia will be dropped. The hatchback and wagon versions of the 6 had been destined for the European and Japanese markets only.

"We start with the sedan, to be followed by the five-door and then the hatchback," said Bill Cook, president of Imported Cars Inc. of Farmington Hills, Mich. Cook is on Mazda's National Dealer Advisory Council.

The 6, which goes on sale this fall, will take on the Toyota Camry, Nissan Altima and Honda Accord in the highly competitive mid-sized segment. The Camry, Altima and Accord do not have hatchback or wagons available.

Mazda has said the 6, while replacing the 626 and Millenia, will be priced at the level of the 626, which starts at $19,215, including $480 for delivery. It will be Mazda's flagship vehicle, the company said.

The company has not given any details regarding volume or engine availability in the hatchback or wagon. The sedan will come to the United States with a 3.2-liter, inline 4-cylinder engine as standard and an optional 3.0-liter V-6.

Mazda last year sold 50,997 626s and 19,849 Millenias. It has not made sales projections for the 6.

Meanwhile, dealers attending the National Automobile Dealers Association convention in New Orleans last week said the company is planning a roadster to join the Miata.

Mazda has not given details on the roadster, but has said it would look for more uses for the new RX-8 platform. The RX-8, a rear-wheel-drive sports coupe with a 250-hp rotary engine, will be on sale next year.

Aside from new products, Mazda management told dealers the company was seeking ways to add production volume. Mazda dealers need more vehicles to sell, as sales of the Tribute sport-utility and Protege compact sedan increased significantly last year.

Dealers were told that Mazda Motor Corp. President Mark Fields and Mazda North American chief Charlie Hughes are attempting to make a case to parent Ford Motor Co. to allocate more resources to Mazda production.

Cook said Fields and Hughes have made it clear that increased production for Mazda is a priority.

It's a joke even comparing that to a Camry or an Accord. It gives the IS300 a serious run for a lot less. The Altima has more power but a less sophisticated chassis and love it or hate it styling.

The Japanese "BIg Two" better get back to the drawing board because the Mazda and Nissan are breathing down their necks (on product that is, not $ ).

gawd...i'm in love with that hatchback. makes you wonder why they're even bothering with a sedan. well, no, I do understand why...but I'd choose the hatch hands down. Nice going, Mazda.

I seen all three of them in person at a "Focus" meeting here in Anaheim. Totally sweet. They really made it come together by lowering the proposed prices we were shown.

Mazda could do wonders for the Focus with a Renesis rotary powered engine in it.

After the 2002 model year Mazda dealers won't have the Millenia to sell, but they will get three versions of the 6 sedan and a roadster, dealers said after the Mazda make meeting Sunday.
Dealers said the 2002 Millenia will be the last, and Mazda spokesman Jay Amestoy confirmed the Millenia's impending death. Mazda sold 19,849 Millenias in 2001.

Bill Cook, president of Imported Cars Inc. of Farmington Hills, Mich., says Mazda will bring a sporty five-door and wagon version of its 6 to the United States.

"We start with the sedan, to be followed by the five-door and then the wagon," said Cook, who is a member of Mazda's National Dealer Advisory Council. He said Mazda also would bring a new roadster.

The 6 is scheduled to arrive early next year and enter the highly competitive mid-sized segment with the Toyota Camry, Nissan Altima and Honda Accord. The 6 will replace the 626, which has suffered against improved competition. The 6 will be Mazda's new flagship.

Mazda showed all three versions of the 6 at the Tokyo auto show in October but said it had not decided whether it would bring anything but the sedan to the United States.

I think that's a bit big for a 4-cylinder. They probably ment a 2.3L 4

What wonderful news!! Excellent post!

The new Mazda 6 looks fantastic, even more so in person. The hatchback has really clean lines. I tell ya what, with the way things are shaping up over the next couple of years, it is going to be really, really difficult to choose a car.

Ah, such a delightful dilemma...

Typo. Has to be. The biggest inline-four I've ever heard of is Dodge's 2.5 liter. And the optional V6 is smaller displacement? Probably 2.3 liter from the Mazda truck.

Is that a typo?! That'd better have some serious counter-balancing!

Man, these are some of the best looking people movers to ever hit the market.
