Default First Mazda Atenza Rolls Off Assembly Line

February 14, 2002
(For Your Information)

First Mazda Atenza Rolls Off Assembly Line at Hofu Plant

The all-new Mazda Atenza (Mazda 6 in overseas markets) went into full production at Hofu Plant No.2 (located at Nishinoura, Hofu in Yamaguchi Prefecture) today. The first volume-produced vehicle was a sedan destined for Europe. The all-new model, which is equipped with a brand new world-class "I4 Engine" and is designed to become the world's benchmark product in terms of dynamic performance, styling, packaging, and quality, goes on sale in Japan early this summer.

Marking the start of mass production, Mazda president Mark Fields, joined by four executives, and some 800 employees, said, "The start of Mazda Atenza production is a milestone in our business turnaround. Atenza is the first of our new generation products that will transform customers' perception of Mazda and in turn our top-line corporate performance. This all-new model fully embodies the Mazda brand DNA, which is refocused on our target customers, and delivers our Zoom-Zoom1 in abundance. Our glitch-free mass production start is credit to many hours hard work and commitment from many hundreds of dedicated people and confirmation that we have rekindled the Mazda spark."

Available in three bodystyles - sedan, hatchback and wagon,2 the all-new Atenza boasts clever styling, invigorating handling and eye-catching good looks as well as status-defining performance. The exterior and interior designs offer customers greater levels of quality and craftsmanship. Atenza also provides a class-leading package with more rear seat room than many other midsize segment products, including some one class higher.

Unparalleled levels of driving performance, combined with all-new powertrains (in 1.8, 2.0 and 2.3 liter versions), make this the best driving Mazda sedan. An extremely stiff body and newly designed front/rear suspension delivers dynamic performance and provide high levels of ride comfort for occupants even during long-distance driving. The high-mounted double-wishbone front suspension and multi-link rear suspension (Type E) ensures extremely reliable and accurate steering.

Hofu Plant No.1 and No.2, where Atenza will be produced, were built in 1982 and 1992 respectively, based on the concept of a "people-friendly plant." The cumulative total production at the two plants producing eight models,3 including the Familia, Capella, and Tribute, reached 5 million units on January 31.

I really am liking this car. It would be nice if it came with a little more engine performance. That would be really sweet.

Nissan Altima levels...240-ish.
I'd still like a curb weight on this vehicle.
Anybody no this info?

I love the styling. I sat in it at the Detroit Autoshow and , I 'm in luv....
the 3.0l V6 is supposed to be powerful.

I hope the handling is as good as the hype.

The Gen II duratec V6 with S-VT makes 217hp,200ft/lbs torque.

in japan and europe the 2.3 will be the top engine maxing out at 180hp.

I'd like about 260-270hp. With this much power it would deffinately kill the Type S Acuras and stay up there with the Altima, hopefully. Maxima would not even come close.

Altima has 240hp and Maxima has 255.

Yes i know, but the Altima is faster than the Maxima. 3.5L Altima that is. Plus the Altima is also less expensive than the Maxima. Isnt that something.

Posted by Mr duck A BON forums.

Mazda 6 1PP is May 13, a 30 car build. A three hundred car build in August and mass production on October 28. Note a second shift will have to be added in the body shop to keep up with assembly line. With only one weld line setup for the Mazda 6 it can not keep up the build required for the assembly line. Plant capacity is about 375,000 at current plant layout.

That's good news but would be better if job 1 for the hatchback was the same as the sedan. Oh well, I guess that means I'll be in the Focus just a little longer.

Ford is being very cautious launching cars these days, They will launch the Sedan first, once quality is up they will launch the sedan, and then the wagon.

I was planning for spring to summer 2003, but if the hatchback were to just start rolling off the lines then I'm not sure I could take the gamble. I know that the sedan version will be the guinea pig, but the hatchback will be slightly different so I want it in production for a few months at least before I buy one. Maybe winter 2003/spring 2004?
