Default Mazda MP3 finally to offer some grunt to back up the handling...

<blockquote><font size="1" face="Verdana, Arial">quote:</font><hr>NY Times article:
But those willing to wait will soon get another chance to buy this car, or one much like it, in a Mazda showroom. Impressed by customers' enthusiasm — and by reviewers' disappointment in the lack of power — Mazda has decided to produce a new version that it will unveil this spring, perhaps at the New York auto show next month. The car will get a new name and, praise the engineers, a turbocharger to give the engine enough juice to match the suspension.
No word yet on how much more the MP3's successor will cost than the $18,500 Mazda charged for the 2002 model. But in light of the traffic jam among under-$20,000 performance cars — think of the Nissan Sentra SE-R Spec V, Honda Civic Si, Ford SVT Focus, Dodge Neon R/T, Toyota Matrix XRS and Pontiac Vibe GT — a big price increase probably isn't in the tea leaves.

Sounds like good stuff! It would be great if they would give us a Protege 5 the same way.

If there was word on the HP, don't you think I would have posted it??

I think 30-50hp extra should be expected though. We'll have to see what they feel safe offering us kids.

well w/ increased HP that'll bolster the aftermarket for probes, 626's, anything else w/the FS_ZE. That engine is making 170hp in japan w/ a 11.5CR So I think asking 30-50 more HP wont be a big deal. It's already making 140...so just a little tiwst and squirt there and it'll be a killer car.

Zoom Zoom!!!

Mazda is one of the few manufacturers that "get it!"

New Mp3 with more power = great that excites me
Rx-8 = long time coming but well worth the wait for the RENESIS
Mazda 6 (atenza) = going to be my next vehicle, haven't been this into a car since the focus.

Mazda is doing good things.

you think that maybe they could add the turbo, give it about 200hp(they have to compete with the SRT-4 after all), take away all the stereo crap and keep it around 19K? i would prefere them to leave out the mp3 stereo add on because i would just replace that anyway. maybe they should just call it MPS

I really like all of these factory turbo cars (1.8T, WRX, Neon SRT, etc.) but at 23 years of age, I know I can't afford insurance on a turbocharged car!!! That's the only problem with factory turbos.

Having a turbocharger causes your insurance rates to change? Never would have guessed that.

I read in a car magazine that Honda of America will soon bring the Type R spec Civic to the U.S.

I read that too Howard, but I'll believe it when I see it. Plus, if they really do price the new Si at $19,000, I can just imagine what the Civic Type-R will sell for.

But hey, at least the CTR will probably be worth it's sticker price.

I too long for a Protege5 done up the same way. It'd be so simple for Mazda...a veritable no-brainer. The hatchback revolution is underway!

Man, used cars are going to be so cool ten years from now...

The Protege will be replaced next fall, expect a 180hp 2.3.

Just because it is turbo, does not mean that the insurance rates will go up. Old chrysler turbos are the best bang for the buck performance cars and cheap as hell to insure.

My wife and I were setting our sites on a P5 but there is not enough power. She does not care, but I do. I hear that the Japanese or European P5 has a 180 hp option already. They need to bring that over here. But Sunday we finally got to drive a WRX. Well I guess there will be no P5, ZX3, or SVT in my future. In the wagon, we came to an agreement, a common ground... YES!!!!!!! I finally get a toy to replace my GLH (RIP). Sorry I am just so excited at the thought. I just have to come up with the extra money for the huge Down Payment. No rebates with those stinkin Subbies. So it might push my purchase off, but it will be worth it.

I still can't believe that the Civic Type R is going to be here before the RSX Type R. The Acura folks are going to be a little ticked..

turbocharged? damn...that is goin to be one SWEET ride. DAMN. that's HOT. makes me alil more disappointed that Ford didn't go the turbo route, costs and R&D aside of course.

but the new mp3 will be very nice. and even more fierce competition on the streets!

Is the Dodge SRT4 sells like hotcakes then Ford will have no choice but to yield - or get left behind (turbo).
