quote:
The anniversary Cougar comes equipped with a color-keyed Roush hood scoop and tailgate spoiler and new for this vehicle are 17-inch chromed wheels and center caps that match the new chromed outside rear view mirrors. Other styling upgrades include a Cougar head emblazoned on the front windshield and on the backlight glass, and the Cougar name is spelled out across the rear decklid. In addition, the V6 badge will be moved from the decklid to the two front fenders just below the new clear side marker lamp. Black leather seats with silver inserts also will be available.

Available in May 2002, the 35th Anniversary Edition Cougar option will have an MSRP of $19,490 including destination and delivery. Production is limited to 3,000. The Mercury Cougar is manufactured in Flat Rock, Mich.

The Ford/Mercury Cougar will be ditched soon, that's no anniversary if you ask me!

Now why would they get rid of it? Its a nice car that gives ford/mercury a nice edge. Man just like the Thunderbirds that they got rid of (although they have a 40k option for the rich now). I just don't understand

Just a heads up on the cougar.
The 35 anniversary special comes with the infamous Visteon Hood Scoop, just like the ZN has on it.
The 17 inch wheels are not really chrome but done in a special coating that appears to be done in chrome. These items where both on a special Wings West 2002 Cougar at Cougarfest this last summer. The 17 inch wheels are the same ones the XR and ZN came with.
As far as why they are canceling the cougar.
The plant in Flat Rock is being retooled to build the Mustang in 2003. At last summer's cougarfest during the tour you could see the new assembly lines being setup to handle the Mustang.
The cougar will be back tho but I'm not sure what year at this point. When it does come back it will be built off the Mustang platform and not the current Modeo platform that was created from the Contour.
If anyone wants any more info on the cougar send me an email.

Wow, another trim package. They actually had a buyer here until they cancelled the Cougar S for reasons unknown. I still have the 2001 Cougar brochure that shows the S.

Without the 200hp SVT-ized engine, I didn't have much interest.

The Cougar S was a sweet ride. I got to see one my first visit to Cougarfest in 2000. Mercury had the Cougar S test mule in the plant for viewing and we got to check it out up close and personal.
You can convert a Cougar to Cougar S with out too much diffuculty tho. A couple of pieces from the SVT Contour parts bin will bring it up to speed. If you go to my website you can see mine with the SVT motor pieces on it along with other go fast goodies.
Also Visteon was bought by Ford and ordered to stop selling retail so Ford could Patent the parts and charge more in their dealers for the same pieces. Now Visteon works on dashes and stereo systems for all the Ford products .

But of course, the only things that we stupid Americans can appreciate are amazingly FUGLY add-ons and cladding. We wouldn't be interested in actually raising the performance level of a car. Heavens no!!

Salesman:"If you like the Ford POS, then you'll love the new Ford POS Super Zany Special Custom Excellent Edition..."
Typical American Boob:"Is that a spoiler AND a Tazmanian Devil decal?!"
Salesman:"Why yes, yes it is."
Typical American Boob:"Golly gee-whiz!! Oh joy of joys!! Whatever you're asking, it isn't enough. I'll give you $10K over MSRP! And if you can manage to reduce HP by 50% AND put in a slushbox automatic tranny, I'll take two!"

Cougarsc99, actually you got it backwards buddy. Ford spun off Visteon into a Tier 1 supplier. Visteon used to be Ford. And I don't think that they bought the rights to the Cougar aftermarket kits. RoadFX was Visteon's attempt to enter the aftermarket world but was quickly stomped on because of bad marketing and decision making on their part. All the tools for the kit were sold to Rousch.

Prelate, most people are posers and would rather look fast and be slow than look slow and be fast. Just the way it goes. Image.

It is pretty though. I wonder how much those wheels cost... I could convert these polished Cougar wheels into race wheels.

Its not so much that the Cougar was a failure, but its not high enough volume to be worthwhile all by its lonesome. When the Contour died (lets face it... the Cougar is a 2-door Contour), the fate of the Cougar was sealed. Ford Motor Company wants cars that they can seriously mass produce on a -global- scale and share lots of parts across lines in order to lower production costs. At first this worried me in that all cars would become essentially the same (less unique), but after thinking about it, I think its a good approach. Its taking the assembly line one step further to improve efficiency.

Well considering that they only made like 900 Cougars last month....I don't think you'll have a problem finding one!

I think they didn't sell because they were too expensive. When I was looking for a Cougar before I bought the Focus, I couldn't find a V6 for under $21k!

the cougar too big and too weak to be a true sporty coupe and too small inside to be a midsize coupe.

Once the cougar bombed in europe it's days were numbered here. Ford loses about as much as they make on the Focus on every cougar made. (1-2000$) The contour was always and expensive platform.

They were selling for like $400 over invoice here, and I'm sure you could have even brought them down a little. I didn't write down specific prices at the time, since I was purchasing A-plan anyway. Edmunds shows a TMV of just $260 over invoice though... at $16,398. Thats pretty cheap. Top of the line, maxed out, fully fluffed is $19,050. What you were seeing was around $2000 over MSRP... for a Cougar... yeah right.

I think you might just have one of those "We can knock the price down 20% for YOU our SPECIAL customer! Look at these savings!!! Slash slash slash!" A Chevy dealer here in Houston does that crap all the time (makes stupid people feel like they got a good deal).

You are exactly right. It's just soooo annoying, that's all. It gets frustrating that those of us who truly appreciate and enjoy performance should have to be lumped into the same group as the rest of the unwashed masses.

Guess I got the Visteon info backwards. Sorry bout that. Just passing on what was told to me.
Hey det_riot, That was probably us at the plant. We have done Cougarfest there 3 years in a row. The first year it wasn't a big event. The second year we had about 50 cougars. This last year it was spread out over a couple of days and I believe the count at the plant was close to 100 Cougars and the Car show at the Museum was 120 +.
