Default 2003 SVT Mustang Cobra Revealed

The 2003 Ford SVT Mustang Cobra was revealed to the public and press today at the Chicago Auto Show. The official SVT website, www.svt.ford.com has been updated with the 2003 Cobra's specs.
On www.svt.ford.com you can also view a 360-degree view of the 2003 Cobra, download photos of it, and create a your own video of the 2003 Cobra in action, which can be emailed to your friends. We also have .pdf files of the 2003 Cobra brochure available for download from our site. Hard copies of the brochure are available from your local SVT dealer (they will receive them very soon, if they haven't already).

Dealers have received the order guide for the 2003 Cobra and they know how many vehicles they will be allocated. Pricing has not yet been finalized, but is expected to come in under $35,000 (for the coupe).

To view the press releases about the 2003 Cobra, visit media.ford.com. This site requires online registration but is available to the public.

[Side Note: The 2002 SVT Focus brochure is now downloadable in .pdf format too! Visit www.svt.ford.com then click on Focus, then click on Download Brochure]

Enjoy!!!

I'll add this tidbit. We all know the advertised HP for this car is 390, but in the new issue of AutoWeek, John Coletti is quoted as saying the output could EXCEED that number by the time the car hits showrooms!

I'm betting this car is underated simply for insurance and PR reasons.

Last year it was 320 NA. Do you really think you are only going to get gains of 70 HP from the supercharger?

I'm sure this car will easily put out more then 390 stock. If not it will be able to be tweaked easily to do so.

*I will be seeing it in person in two day... *

Also svtresearch, or a mod may want to fix the links in the first post, the comma's are caught in the link thus not loading properly.

Pick up a copy of Muscle Mustangs and Fast Fords... its not the first time a Eaton supercharger has been strapped to a Mustang.

Here is an example of an existing intercooled Eaton blower kit for Mustangs. They don't dyno at 320whp/320wftlbs (390- 18% driveline losses). Example 1 (M90 + air/water intercooler). Thats about 360ftlbs and around 350hp at the crank. The Saleen S281SC uses a Eaton SC and produces 365hp and 400ftlbs at the crank. Roush Stage III Mustang again produces 360hp with the unit.

390hp and 390ftlbs with a intercooled Eaton is not that low. I'd be very surprised if Ford isn't using the same Eaton M90 supercharger as most of the kits. 305hp/300ftlbs is already plenty of power... need a new chassis and suspension (then I'll whore myself for the money to upgrade). Hey Duc, isn't that dyno for the SOHC, though? THat would be one reason why they're not putting up 320 whp. I'd expect more of a gain with the blower on the more freely breathing 32v. There may in fact be a little more to be eked out from this setup.

True... Thats why they are getting about 30-40hp more than most SOHC head 4.6s using an Eaton blower already.

Pretty sure there is no insurance book that charges more after 390hp... and if they could have matched the LS6 in the power department easily, I'm sure it would have been done. Just providing the usual quick reality check not that people hope Viper power is a pulley away (we'll keep that in one forum hehe).

Maybe I need one of these more than the Lightning I've always wanted. If I had the cash my Focus would have been gone yesterday.

Since we have SVT folks here....

Is the car shown above still convered under warranty after the burnout is completed?

That's a serious question!! Who can resist the temptation of having almost 400hp under their feet!

Awesome! I would seriously consider this car. One question though - living in Michigan...

I dont see any mention of the Traction Control? Will it be available? It was on previous models...

Thanks!

"Who can resist the temptation of having almost 400hp under their feet!"

Anyone that has to pay for their own tires. I had fun with my buddies too at our old highschool parking lot when I was getting ready to put on new tires. Circular marks were so thick it lasted for several months. But don't be an idiot like me, and ROLL UP YOUR WINDOWS.

You are too tall. *squinting eyes* Cobra leg room: 41.8 in. Focus leg room: 43.1 in. Its just 1.3" difference.

"Would rather see that power in a Focus..."

So you can torque steer and plow into oblivion. Its probably too much for that Mustang, but definitely too much for FWD Focus with skinny tires. Wise man say, happy man have balance: Power=control=traction.

"'96 Mustang Cobra
mods: ohhh, just a few"
PM me... I have a lightly modded 96' as well. Curious what you did with it.

That was the first thing I thought of. 7psi on a 320hp NA 32V motor, hmmm. I wouldn't be the least bit surprised to see that hummer at more like 425hp. I'm sure as soon as a mustang mag gets there hands on one the truth will come out. Also, it's probably a pulley away from some big numbers!

What are the other relavent dimensions (like headroom)? I'm way more than 1.3" away from being able to fit comfortably in a Mustang. I think I've got a picture somewhere of me at the Seattle auto show last November looking over the windsheild of a '01 or '02 Mustang convertible with ease.

edit: Yes, I was trying to sit in the driver's seat at the time.

edit #2: 39.3" (SVT Focus) vs. 38.1" (Cobra) headroom... Still seems like there's much, much more room in the Focus... Hmmm...

edit #3: Just to be complete, the Lightning is listed as 40.9" of leg room and 40.8" of headroom... At this point it sounds like it'll be cheaper than the Cobra, and while it gives up 10 HP it looks to get 60 more ft/lbs of torque.

Ok, no more edits.

The only weakness of the new Cobra is that due to the change to an Iron block and the addition of the blower they are VERY heavy.

3665 for the coupe and 3770 for the vert! Porky!
Im sure they will still be touching 12s quarter miles out of the box with powershifts and a 1.9' 60' though.
