Default Ford 500 the XXL Focus.

<blockquote><font size="1" face="Verdana, Arial">quote:</font><hr>NEW YORK, March 28, 2002 – The Ford Five Hundred is set to change the face and the space of the family sedan when the all-new car goes on sale in 2004.

At this year’s New York International Auto Show, Ford is giving media a preview of the new car that will offer incomparable passenger roominess, a tall seating position, sophisticated styling and command of the road.

"The Five Hundred is the result of asking questions about the family sedan that no one thought to ask," says Chris Theodore, Ford’s vice president of North America Product Development. "While everyone has been scrambling to invent the ‘next big thing,’ our team asked, ‘What about the car?’ We decided to put some of the features people love about minivans and SUVs into our all-new sedan."

The new Five Hundred is one of the 20 new products Ford Motor Company will introduce each year across its brands in North America through 2005.

The Five Hundred was created from the inside out using Ford’s "high-package" design strategy. As a result, the car’s interior roominess is equal to and even better than many larger cars – while retaining the elegant exterior proportions, maneuverability and fuel-economy benefits of a mid-size car..

Inside-Out Design

The Ford Five Hundred literally was designed around the customer. It comfortably seats five adult passengers, with surprising spaciousness in the rear – including nearly three-and-one-half feet of legroom. This spaciousness tops every mid-size sedan on the road today, including many large European luxury sedans.

Precisely executed ergonomics and careful attention to detail further define the interior. The cockpit is designed to allow drivers of all shapes and sizes to find comfortable seating positions and for all vehicle controls and storage spaces to fall easily to hand..

Command-of-Road Driving Position

The Five Hundred’s "command-of-road" driving position is derived from one of the features minivan and SUV buyers regularly cite as a major selling point. The car’s "greenhouse" area has been carefully crafted to provide more headroom and the ability to raise the "H-point" – or hip-point – of the front seats.

The H-point of the Five Hundred is two to four inches higher than the car’s mid- and full-sized sedan competition. The design also affords a more "upright" position of the front seats, delivering the "command-of-road" position coveted by SUV buyers..

"It’s an ergonomist’s design dream," says Theodore. "It’s a car that you ‘step into’ rather than crawl into or – in some cases – fold yourself into."

Elegance and Style

The Five Hundred continues the evolution of Ford’s car design strategy. Its exterior is contemporary and elegantly designed – with minimalist, clean accent lines and smooth surfaces. The theme creates a prominent greenhouse that centers the design and achieves carefully balanced proportions designed to be sophisticated and athletic.

New Powertrain

The Five Hundred will use a new version of Ford’s 3.0-liter Duratec V-6 and also feature a six-speed automatic or a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). The CVT is the first of the new technologically advanced transmissions developed and produced under Ford’s joint venture with ZF, the world’s largest independent specialist for driveline and chassis technology.

The CVT will provide exceptionally smooth operation and help to deliver up to a 10 percent fuel economy improvement versus a traditional powertrain.

Safety Leadership

Ford’s commitment to safety leadership will continue with the new Five Hundred. It will feature the latest level of Ford’s Personal Safety Systemä – one of the most comprehensive and technologically advanced safety systems available in any vehicle in any class.

The new sedan also will feature anti-lock brakes, traction control, side-curtain air bags and AdvanceTracä , an advanced interactive vehicle dynamic stability control system..

Advanced Manufacturing

Production of the new Five Hundred will begin at Ford’s Chicago Assembly Plant in 2004. When the plant is reconfigured for the new product, it will feature a flexible body shop that allows one set of tooling to build multiple vehicle configurations. This represents a major step forward in Ford’s revitalization plan – with the ability to quickly create unique and fresh products, share major components to save cost and ensure quality, and make extensive use of flexible manufacturing to match customer demand and maximize efficiency.

New to the Ford Lineup

Five Hundred will be an all-new addition to the Ford lineup. The smaller Ford Taurus – one of the best-selling cars in America – will remain and continue to be produced at Ford’s Atlanta Assembly Plant.

Also new to the lineup in 2004 will be the Ford CrossTrainer, which was announced last month at the Chicago Auto Show. The CrossTrainer is a crossover vehicle designed for up to seven passengers and their cargo.

Does anyone know about the upcoming Ford car code named "Galaxie?"

Is this it? Or can someone link me to some info regarding this? Did a search and didn't find any messages regarding this.

Could have SWORE that I heard this name thrown out right about the time the Ford execs met with the dealers to reassure them of the products they have in the pipeline.

This I know about...as well as the Galax(ie) from the 60's as I had a '66 2-door hardtop 500.

I give up...I have searched archives at Blueovalnews, detnews, thecarconnection, auto.com, just-auto.com and can't find the ONE story where Ford told the dealers they had a project in the works codenamed Galaxie. That dealer meeting happened around the 15th of Feb I think.

Anyway, here is a short article on this new Five Hundred: http://www.auto.com/industry/ford28_20020328.htm

"But analysts caution that Ford's product cupboard looks fairly bare in the near future. New models like the Five Hundred are still two years away."

Why does every single automotive story nowadays absolutely, positively must quote some desk dweeb from some paper factory where the only thing they produce is opinions?

After reading this article, this car sure seems like it was one I'm had read about.

nah more Audi-ish ...lets remember J Mays came from VW/Audi.

Anyways what is this cars market? who is it going to compete agaist?

I think the name is kinda lame too....Galaxie would have been much cooler and they could have a Galaxie 500 as the Hi-po verison

Wow the headlights and front look like the Lexus but that back end is totally an A6

But hey I dont care what it gets compared to. Its very nice!

Now Ford needs the Mondeo here so I can go from Focus to Mondeo to the 500. It makes too much sense not to do it

We had a Galaxy in our family in the late 60's, it was a 1966 I believe and gave up the ghost in 1973. That was the last Ford ANYONE in my family ever bought until I got the Focus in 2000.

I concur.

Front definately has the Lexus influence but the greenhouse is Passat and the rear is Audi/VW

But that is not a bad thing. Especially when you consider this is replacing the Taurus.

I think the car will actually be bigger then a Passat in person. It's hard to judge the exact scale from the rendering but they keep mentioning how "tall" it is?

it is not replacing the taurus. It will be sloted above the taurus for retail only, and the taurus will be left to the fleet market.

If ford doesn't find a true escort replecment for the fleet market I fear the Fcous may have the same fate as the taurus, and be canibalized by the low profit fleet market.

I dont understand why this bothers you so much..you have to relize that any car you buy will loose value and compact/subcompact cars have horrible resale vaule to start with. lets remember that the Focus is "basic" transportation for the North American market and will never retain its sale value like a higher end Lexus or the like. This is part of the reason why I dont lease a car, because in the long term your pissing money away, even though you could afford a more expensive vechicle then if you bought out right...plus I drive too many miles a year.

THEY ALL LOOK THE SAME!!! I'm gonna buy a 1974 Chevy Station wagon, install an LTI, 700R4, slam it, redo the interior, and paint it Hugger Orange. Now that's what I can roomy, reliable, family transportation, and it won't look like a DAMN EGG!!!!!

(by the way, Happy Easter)

agree on negative effect of reliance on rental fleet.

maybe they will come up with two small cars, though not anytime soon I assume. Will have to see how this works.

I remember the Fairlane 500 station wagon, I was young but remember it in the family.

Did they introduce the drawing or an actual version of the car at the auto show. will be interesting to see the actual car. I'm find the front end/grill boring.

The fleet market requires different things than the Retail market. Ford needs a cheaper car below the focus so they can maintian the profitability of the Focus. If the koreans can sale 300,000 subcompacts in this country why can't for sale the Fiesta in this country? to replace the escort with a cheap well built, high quality car. The focus shouldn't be the the basic model in ford's lineup it is too expensive and too good to be cheapened for that market. That's what the fiesta is for. Build it in brazil along with the Fusion to sell to the fleets and keep the focus strong in the retail market.
<hr></blockquote>

Isn't the Fiesta too small to sell in this country do to crash regulations? The last time the Fiesta was sold in this country was back in the very late 70's early 80's before the NA Escort came out. My old man had a 1979 Fiesta and it was pretty nice car considering it was a stripper model, and it had a hell of a lot better performance then the 82 Escort Station wagon my Mom got!

Also if Ford goes the route of building the Fiesta and Fusion in Brazil and imports them to USA...I think the UAW is going to give them hell since their are what 4 plants going to be getting closed and all their product lines going to one plant...how conventant for Ford and their workers get holding the bag.

But anyway you make a good point with the decontenting of the Tarus, though why doesnt any Fleet companies buy a Forgein car for fleet use?
