Default new Fiesta 3 Door

Ford Fiesta: New models

30/7/2002

Ford has pulled the wraps off its new three-door Fiesta that will go on sale in December with prices starting below the £8000 mark - some £500 cheaper than the five-door version.

The three-door sits on the same platform as the current five-door model but offers a more sharply raked roofline at the expense of slightly less boot space.

Due to make its public debut at the Birmingham Motor Show in October, the rakish three-door version will whet the appetite of hot Ford fans with the promise of a 120bhp Zetec-S model early next year - good enough for a 0-60mph dash of around 8.5 seconds.

However, the anticipated ST150 model is still a long way off - blue oval power junkies will have to wait at least 2 years before the tuned Fiesta is unleashed.

For now though, the quickest three-door version will be the 99bhp 1.6-litre model - the same engine used in the five door.

The new model will also introduce a new clutchless semi-automatic gearbox dubbed Durashift EST, and the sprightly 75bhp 1.25 Duratec engine employed in the last generation Fiesta will make a welcome comeback to broaden the powertrain line-up.

It joins the existing range of engines - the 67 bhp 1.3-litre, the 79 bhp 1.4-litre, the 99 bhp 1.6-litre and the punchy 67 bhp turbo diesel TDCi engine.

Durashift EST allows the driver to opt either for fully automatic mode or to switch to manual mode, nudging the gearlever back and forth for sequential up and down.

Sadly there are no steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters and the car will be aimed primarily at urban drivers. The £375 option will only be available with the 79 bhp 1.4-litre engine.

Three electric motors do the work of actuating the clutch and gear selector, and the system has a built-in degree of 'creep' for smooth take-off at slow speed.

Ford claims unparalleled reliability for the Durashift and drivers can expect 145,000miles of maintenance-free motoring.

the fiests from the 70's probaly the 1st generations were so great. I wish they never left. Its great to see ford still builds them, its even greater to see them tuned via the publications of the UK ford tuner mags.

My favorite car that I've ever owned was a '78 Ford Fiesta. It was almost the same color as my '02 Egg Yolk Focus. I had sooooo much fun in that car.

How cute! It's a mini-focus. Maybe they should call it "mini Focus"? I would love to see someone shoehorn one of the 2.3L engines in there though!

quote:
FORD’S NEW GENERATION OF SMALL CARS WELCOMES THE ALL-NEW FIESTA 3-DOOR

Ford’s new generation of small cars has acquired another family member – the Fiesta three-door. At the same time new technologies are being introduced to the Fiesta range to broaden its appeal and further extend its acknowledged driving quality.

The introduction of the Fiesta three-door model reinforces Ford’s commitment to rejuvenate its small-car range as part of a product-led transformation of its European business. Ford has already launched the Fiesta five-door model, and the public introduction of its new Fusion Urban Activity Vehicle is taking place this autumn. The new three-door Fiesta is aimed squarely at younger drivers, and is destined for Ford dealerships before year-end.

But the story won't end there, as two new Ford small-car technologies will be launched across the range:

· A new Durashift EST (Electronic Shift Technology) automatic-shift manual transmission provides Fiesta customers with the benefits of an automatic transmission without the usual small-car drawbacks, plus the flexibility of manual-style shifting without a clutch pedal. Durashift EST will be available on Fiesta models equipped with the 1.4-litre Duratec 16V petrol engine and the 1.4-litre Duratorq TDCi common-rail diesel engine.

· An Electronic Stability Programme (ESP) system broadens Fiesta’s driver-orientated technologies. This advanced driving aid senses the vehicle’s response to steering inputs and automatically intervenes to correct the vehicle’s movement if it differs from the driver’s intention. ESP is especially valuable in helping the driver maintain control when encountering unexpected road conditions. ESP will be available from early 2003 on Fiesta models equipped with Duratorq TDCi and 1.6-litre Duratec 16V engines.

“Our launches of new small-car products and technologies are continuing at a fast pace,” said Glen Goold, chief programme engineer. “The new three-door Fiesta model has all of the strengths of its five-door counterpart in a distinctive, appealing shape. Its introduction demonstrates how serious we are about offering our customers the widest possible choice of small cars and technologies.”

The new Fiesta three-door embodies the dependable strengths of the new Fiesta family – style, space, safety, driving quality and value.

Three-door Fiesta Style

Fiesta’s new three-door model evokes a unique image that distinguishes it from its five-door counterpart. The three-door model looks compact, sportier and even more dynamic.

Behind the different personality created for the three-door by Ford designers, it shares a common genetic profile with the Fiesta five-door, including many common dimensions. Both have the same ‘face’ and are identical below the body crease line. But it is the Fiesta three-door’s unique profile with its sloping roofline and more angled tailgate glass that gives it a special spark of personality.

“Creating a visual separation between the two Fiesta models was important,” said Ford’s exterior chief designer, Mark Adams. “Our goal with the Fiesta three-door was to achieve a sportier, more agile style reflecting the aspirations of three-door buyers and signalling the dynamic driving quality of the new Fiesta.”

Adams’ team first set about lowering the roof profile by rocking the roofline from the top of the A-pillar and pulling it down towards a lowered rear header. The whole daylight opening (DLO) was made sportier by increasing the wedge of the beltline and by dropping the upper line much lower than on the Fiesta five-door model. The rear edge of the DLO was also pulled forward and angled more dramatically to emphasise the car's compact and dynamic character.

Another way that the team made the car visually more compact was by bringing the rear header forward by 75 mm, giving a faster profile to the rear end.

As a result, the tail lamp is further forward, though it wraps around the C-pillar in a similar fashion to the five-door. The tail lamp is also sho.............

OK let me get tis straight, we supposedly live in the "best country in the world" or whatever. Then every time I look on the web Mexico or Brasil are getting every great car that we never see. WTF? Is there a chance that the Fiesta may end up coming here at all? It would be a great entry level car and commuet for the 80% or so of Americans who live in urban areas. Ford should really think about expanding their base...

I agree that sometimes in Mexico we get more european versions of ford cars, but there is one thing we never get the all equipment, for example is the fiesta is missing the traction control, abs and the airbags and they do not sell the ST150, In the focus is the same if you want a ZX3 your only have 6 colors, no traction control, no 16" wheels; if you want the Sedan you cant get it with abs, tach and airbags. If Ford is selling this cars in Mexico I thinks that they MOST sell all the versions.
But at least now we have MG,Seat, Peugeot,Renault,Skoda and Rover

P.S. I love european cars
