i have 2 sets of infinity kappa 682.7cf speakers in my car and i went on crutchfield to order a sub and i was told i couldnt run those speakers without an amp bc it would kill them, so now i have a new amp that i have no idea how to hook up. any truth to the underpowered speaker damage bc ive had some ppl tell me its a myth?

to an extent underpowering speakers will die. if that were really true then the mute button would be the speakers worst enemy. the thing that really kills speakers is thermal break down on the components of a speaker like the voice coil.

If you are underpowered and turn it up too loud, the distortion can overdrive the tweeters. Distortion passes right through the crossover. If you don't have any distortion or clipping, then I can't see how you could hurt the speakers.

Hey there - if you check the stuck threads in this forum - there is one about common questions - there actually is a topic there on this very question!
Here you go: http://forums.focaljet.com/ice-car-e...-speakers.html

I think so. Another factor I forgot to mention is that these speakers may be less efficient than average and require more power to get normal sound levels. You combine higher power needs with less power available and you will be much more likely to get clipping and distortion. You will just have to be careful not to turn it up to the point of distortion, but that is always true. It just happens easier on a low powered amp. |

you absolutely CANNOT kill speakers by underpowering them. It's already been debated on what does kill them, but it's not a lack of power. As long as you feed them a clean signal, you'll be fine
