Since I’m doing a blue LED conversion why not? Plus I did the power lock light mod so it didn’t take me long at all to figure this out.
What’s needed:
-A Focus lock switch.
- Power lock wiring harness with wire length.
-18ga Wire, quick disconnects, Scotchlocks, soldering iron, and/or your usual electrical supplies.
1. Remove the seat from the car.
2. The switch has glue around it; mine flaked off easily with a screwdriver. Remove the glue and the switch.
3. If you pop the switch open you’ll see there is no LED…
4. … so take your lock switch with the LED and open it up. Simply swap the “top” of the seat switch to the “bottom” of the green lock switch which already has an LED in it.
Lock and seat respectively. The lock switch has two extra pins for the LED
Test: I converted to blue.
Now to wire the LED to the seat:
5. This is exactly the same as the lock switch LED write-ups. You can TRY to solder wire to the leads inside the switch and not be able to disconnect it ever… or you can get a spare lock wiring harness form the junkyard and do it OEM. I had a spare lock harness from doing lock switch mod with wire on it; remove two of the pins for the seat. You have to remove the white clip on top (not shown) and fiddle with the clip inside with a small screwdriver until you can get the pin to slide out of the back.
6. On the seat remove the white clip and put click the pins in the harness.
The pins on the switch are 5 positive, 4 negative. So put the pins in the corresponding holes.
New pins, don’t forget to put the white clip back on.
7. I thought it was logical to have the wires extend to the large harness that you have to unbolt under the seat, I put quick disconnects on them and zip tied them securely to the seat. I soldered 18ga wire to the 22-24ga wire because the disconnects will crimp on better.
Wiring in the car:
8. I grounded the wire to the bolt that holds the seat position sensor(?) under the carpet , there’s an access flap in the carpet.
9. For the + power you can extend the wire to the headlight switch. I hooked mine up the headlight knob + power so it will come on with the headlight knob and door switches. OR if you have heated seats you can tap into that to have it come on with the parking lights.
10. Make sure you have plenty of slack on the wires, I zip tied mine to the length of main seat harness that comes out of the carpet for protection and range of motion. Put your quick disconnects on these wires. Install the seat and plug everything in.
Done!
