H&R reace with koni with camber plates? - Focaljet

I just got the combination installed and after getting every thing tightened down and back together. It sounds like the spring is not sitting all the way down and it can rotate a little and causes binding. This is only seems to happen under slow turns and lower load rates if it is a faster turn with more load it doesn't do it. Just wanted to see if you have any suggestion?

PS Other than this problem I love them for the easy use and work great a lot better than SPC plates

Mine has done this for 20,000 miles and 2 track days.

I think the thing you are hearding is the lack of insulation that was in the old strut bearings.

I really don't think it is a problem and when up in the air on the lift everything is tight and shows no signs of rubbing.

I have the Koni adjustables, LCR race plates and H&R Race Springs also.

I have the same setup as dave. I havent had any sounds that you mention. Triple check the seating of everything.

Maybe its time for some tie rod ends or sway bar end links.

IT wasn't the setup it was just the konis where to long I could almost put every thing together with out a spring compressor. Which was kind of scary. So, I had my old spax shocks that are made for lowering springs and changed everything over to them and Now I have no problems.

Interesting. I didnt use a spring compressor either for my install of the HR race springs. Everything went smoothly.

Glad you solved your problem...I personally hate the odd noises.

Like Adam said, that shouldn't matter. When the weight of the car is on the spring, it will compress a bit and hold it in place.

I have the same problem - Koni sports, H&R race springs, and street plates. I get several KA-CHUNKs when turning to lock at full camber setting. I know it is the strut ass'y because after the KA-CHUNK the spring is ringing. I moved the plates to about center and I still get the noise, only different.

Could LCR please comment on this issue? I am going to Road Atlanta in two weeks - if this is normal then I won't worry. Otherwise, I'll have to disassemble the strut.

I have run 2 events since putting mine in with this noise and have had zero problems or wear issues.

Is it coming from one side only?

nope - both sides do it, with one side a bit more pronounced than the other. Both do it when turning 3/4-full lock at low speeds (like turning into a parking place).

It is about 75% repeatable - in my driveway I drove up on some slick magazines and turned the steering wheel from 3/4 to lock about 10 times. Ka-chunk nearly every time. Then I turned the wheel to full lock the other way and the other side popped.

I checked for the obvious - rubs in the fender well, tie-rod end links, ball joints, etc. All that looks fine, plus I didn't have the noise until the the Konis,H&Rs, and camber plate struts were installed. I have Koni Sports with Steeda springs on my other SVTF and have never had any of this.

After looking at the pics, the LCR plates don't have the wide diameter thrust bearing that sits in the spring hat and allows the spring to rotate freely. Instead, if I understand correctly, the LCR plates transfer all of the thrust and rotation load to the center spherical bearing. Maybe asking a lot from a relatively small bearing? Maybe the lower collet is slipping in the spring hat adapter?

What I have noticed that when I put the camber plates to full camber I get no noise at all, however if I have them set for the street setting I have on that still grinds. I have taken it off and it looks like the back of the studs are catching and rubbing the rounded cup. With this rubbing it doesn't let the spring rotate properly causing it to bind then pop or sometimes get the studs grinding across the upper part of the metal cup. It seems that there needs to be a little more space between the metal cup and the indexing spacer.

I've been driving the car more the last couple days, and the KA-CHUNKs are more frequent. My impression is that the spring is not free to rotate with the strut and is slipping in the seats - i.e., the top hat is not rotating as much as the lower spring seat and is torque-ing up the spring - until it shifts in the seat (pops).

The popping does not happen in the same place everytime, leading me to think it isn't a mounting studs/clearance issue.

Anyone think a thin rubber isolator in the seats would keep the spring from shifting?
