Default Omni Kit ... just installed, had a problem.

Hey guys. Love your stuff but I just figured I would let you guys know what happened a couple weekends back when I installed some stuff on my car.

First of all ... my car is a 2006 ZX3 SE.

Second of all, everything was bought used and that might have been the cause for everything but we doubt it.

I bought an Omni Kit second hand from a fellow Jet member for later use. I thought I had a blown damper up front so another Jet member sold me his stock SVT suspension.

Rears went on fine, as one would expect. The fronts however had a slight problem. When I went to reinstall the dampers and springs, the bolt would not locate properly. Neither the stock (larger) or the one that comes with the kit (smaller) bolt would locate through the hole to tighten everything down.

The hook on the damper that locates the bolt was blocking the bolts path.

We think this is an issue with the suspension pieces being factory stuff. Just thought you guys would like the info for testing purposes.

Which portion of the strut hook is blocking the bolt? (ie. does the strut need to move up or down to properly fit?)

I would think just a little jostling of the strut/knuckle could cure your problem. Maybe im missing something though?

Got any pictures of what your talking about?

Te part circles is where the bolt locates ... there is no way any jostling would allow the bolt to pass through properly. It took modification of the circled piece to get everything to work.

Inside, it looked something like this ...

Gray - Bolt hole
Black - Obstruction

I got it to work. Just thought that Massive would like to know of this single issue. It might be a one in a thousand thing, I have no clue. it might be because my stuff was all used equipment. And it might be because I was using stock Ford parts instead of aftermarket Ford parts.

Still a great product and am glad they made the kit.

Rob, what you have circled isn't what gave us the problem. You circled the bracket for the ABS/brake line. What we had a problem with was this:

On the bottom of the strut, there is a little eylet hook thing that helps you align the strut when it slips into the knuckle (I think that's what it's called....but idk that's what came to mind. I'm pretty tired right now). It fits in the open space on the back of the knuckle, then you slide the bolt through the knuckle, then it's supposed to go through the hook, and then it threads into the other half of the knuckle...or in the case of the bolts provided with the omni kit the bolt goes through it all and you use the lockwasher and nut on the outide of the opposite side.

The problem we ran into when we were trying to out my stock stuff on Rob's car ws the inner diameter of the hook on the bottom of the strut was way too small to fit either bolt through (the omni kit bolt or the stock one from his car). When we held the OEM SVT strut up to his OEM 06 strut, the two hook sizes were drastically different.

What we couldn't figure out was why it hadn't been mentioned before. Is it something that isn't a common problem maybe? Or do people just chop that little hook off and not worry about it or mention it anywhere on the forum? The only reason we could think of as to why we had the problem was because these were OEM struts that came on an SVT from the factory, not bought as a Ford Racing kit.

Hopefully you can shed some light on this Karl, because we were kinda puzzled by it. We ended up using bolt cutters to lop the offending chunk of metal off and from there on it was a breeze.

Like Rob said, the Omni kit is fantastic and we're not in any way bashing it or trying to turn people away...we're just curious if you've heard of or encountered this problem before

Hmmm.... Thats bizarre. We have sold hundreds of kits, and this would be the first issue of that sort we have encountered.

Maybe, as bryst points out, you did indeed have the early style spindle. But then the Omni kit bushings really wouldn't have fit into the strut opening.

Indeed .. if I had the early suspension, then the omnikit wouldn't have worked.

Everything fit together fine, except for the alignment on that bolt. Should have taken a photo for ya but it was dark and I had no camera with me. And now with the the way we modified the part, it wouldn't be any good to take one.

Like i said... is probably nothing. I wouldn't worry about it if I were you guys. But if it pops up again with somebody else, you already have an idea of what they are talking about hopefully.
