You simply unbolt the drivers side airbag from the steering wheel using a 5.5mm socket. To remove the passenger side airbag, remove the glovebox and remove all neccessary bolts. The module does need to be replaced. It has a crash sensor in it that needs to be replaced when in an accident.

Noresull, absoluteley right! Kinda hard these days to find someone who gives out correct airbag info. Good job on that one in regards to the control unit Would you believe that when I used to work for and airbag service and replacement company, the insurance adjusters would want to fight me on this fact? They would actually ask me to "hammer" the sensor straight ind re-use it just to save $70.00! (this price was for the external type sensors, the control module goes for a lot more, as you know) One guy asked me to "re-pack" the airbag into the steering wheel so that it can be reused! I guess anything for a buck.

Well DUH it's Noresull, the ford tech from hell!

No, really, if he says something you can take it as-is with confidence. I've seen him say stuff, and watched people tell him he's a liar just because they weren't pleased with his synopsis (even though it was more than probably correct).

If he doesn't know, he stays silent or says he doesn't know. (although don't think him not answering means he doesn't know). If he needs more info or if it's something that's an "I'd have to see for myself" then he says that too.

In short: Don't be surprised if you find out Noresull is batting .997

According to the ford service cd if your focus was manufactured after 2/2000 then follow noresull's instructions for the pass side airbag. If your focus was built before 2/2000 then you have to pry the airbag cover off from the top of the dash...remove the four bolts and just pull it out. That's how I did mine. I just bought used airbags from a 2000 focus but they mount different than my originals so they must have been manufactured after feb 2000. Just in case you didn't know..the control module is under the center console in between the seats.

Also, don't you have to remove the ground cable from the battery when re-installing the new ones?? The cd talks about it but I have never done it when changing airbags on cars. I would like to know... .

Always disconnect the battery when working on airbag systems. You also have to wait a few minutes (average is 10-15 min.) to allow the capacitor inside the control module to fully discharge. The capacitor holds a charge large enough so that if you lose ignition or electrical in the car moments before an accident, your airbags can still function. Also as a safety precaution, try to keep your fingers and stuff from touching the metal part of the connector on the new airbag, static electricity has been known to be enough to discharge an airbag. I would also try to find a ford or Mitchell manual so you don't miss any important safety notes. I forgot to add that most fords used to come with collapsable steering columns too. The focus might have one (should). If your impact was severe enough, I would check the column and replace it if it collapsed. (check the gap between the back of the steering wheel and the plastic cover of the column, there should be a small gap there, also pull the steering wheel forward and back to check for play, be careful though, if your column telescopes, don't confuse this action with a broken column) Check your clockspring for burns or damage (thingy that drivers airbag plugs into) If this is damaged, it must be replaced. You have 12V running through it for the horn and it is in close proximity to the airbag wire, this is a bad combination if you have damaged insulation. Also be careful with the clockspring assy. or the column when the clockspring is still attached to it. It's only designed to turn a certain number of revolutions in each direction. If installed off center and you turn the wheel left or right to the extreme, it will break the ribbon cable inside and you risk accidental discharge of the airbag, or at the very least you're out some cash. I can't state this enough: if you are not going to have a professional do it, at least get an authorized manual to help you avoid surprises. I've seen too many accidental depployment injuries not so state this.

Hehe, I heard a funny story about the reason a capacitor is there. If you get in a wreck where you slam into a gaurdrail, and rip the battery out of the car, the airbags will still go off once you hit the bottom of the gulley. Sorry, that is just how I remember those kinds of things!

Now that airforcefocus mentions it, I would recomend replacing the clockspring, no questions asked. Also, the seat belt pre-tensioners need to be replaced. This is the buckle assembly, I beleive the Focus only has one, but look in the manual to find out. When the airbags go off, these to go off and are no longer useable. The column in the Focus is collapsible and also, if it is collapsed, replace it!
