    Default Disable chip key?

Does anyone know a way to disable the chip key? I lost one of my keys only to find out that you have to have both keys to make a spare.. What sense does that make? Another thing they didn’t bother to tell me when I bought the car. Anyhow they want $80 for a new key. I figure that with the ingenuity on this board someone knows how to bypass or disable this feature altogether. I know that if you want to install a remote start there is something you can buy to send a false signal but I think that you need both keys to program this too. Any help at all is appreciated.

if you take apart your key you can take the transponder out and tape it up by the ignition switch. and then any 2.99 key cut right will start your car. if you do this go to a hardwear store and have them make you a key to 'just get in the door' . if they look confused go some where else.

Is this something that you have done? Was it hard to get out. I was afraid it would be molded in and I would endup breaking it just trying to get it appart. If its just the chip I'd probably be able to tape it inside the column so theres nothing stuck to the outside.
    thanks

i have done it but i dont have it done. i used to work at a hardwear store. i cut keys.
look at your key. see how the key ring hole is offset? thats because of the chip inside. now look on top. see that little square you can hardley see? use a knife or pic and pop that square off. you may mutilate your key a bit but it wont be to bad. once u have that off you should see a white thing or mayby sone other color. the point is pull that out. that is the transponder. tape that up by your ignition. actually on the cylinder under the plasic covers and [censored] would be best. i am not sure how far away it works. just be aware that if you brake the transponder you will need 2 keys cut and programed to start your car. also after this mod your car will be easyer to steal. not that anyone should know about your mod, but just fyi

Here's something to try. Get a key made "to open the door". Then place your old key with the transponder in the ash tray and see if it is close enough to start with a new key. This would be nice since you wouldn't have to destroy your existing key. Actually I might try this tonight just as a backup.

Be careful taking the 'chip' out. It's in a little glass vial that is very easy to break. You're probably better off taping the key inside the steering column housing if you can't get another one made. This will make your car substantially easier to steal.

ask them how much it costs to cut and program a transponder key if you bring in a blank. I sell them on my site for $15+shipping. The transponders work well. right now all I have are black head keys, hopefully soon I'll get clear head ones back too.

Anyhow, A lot of stealerships charge anywhere from $25-50 per key. Mine charges 29.99. Others sell the keys themselves for a more modest price of $15-$20. Usually the programming is the expensive part because a tech needs to sit there with a computer hooked up to your car for a whole hour (part of the security procedure to program new keys).

    It's worth a shot though.

YOU NEED TWO KEYS. Yes, anyone can program their own keys if they have 2 that work already. Go back and read this thread over again. He has only one key. You can't program your new PATS key with only one existing key, unless you have a WDS or NGS computer to hook up to the car, and yes, you have to leave it hooked up for a long time, something like a whole hour. Those computers cost upwards of $3,000. Even if you did have one of those, you could not do it in 15-20 mins.

thats what Im talking about, disable the whole system, I think like 10 cars a year get stolen here and 9 of those are boneheads who leave the car running and unlocked when they go inside..so I don't need this. Its just a huge headache and expense.
