Default Car wont start, makes a clicking noise

Hey Guys and Gals, I am back again for your much needed help.

My Focus died on me about 2 weeks ago, and now it wont start at all. It all started where every now and then, when I turned the key to start the ignition, it would just make this clicking noise, then after a few times, it would finally stop clicking, it would turn over and start. It only did that every now and then, till now, where thats all it will do. Whenever I turn the key, all it does it makes a clicking noise in the engine. Cant tell where the noise is coming from since I cannot get out of the car, look at the engine and turn the key at the same time.

    Any Ideas???

Try jumping the car with another car. Sounds like a dead battery... which could also be traced to a bad alternator.

Not to sound like I totally know what I am talking about, but I dont think the battery is dead, all the lights and everything come on just fine and stay on when cranking the key, even 2 weeks after it last ran. So to me, the battery sounds ok, any other ideas. Thanks for the help, by the way

your battery dosent have enough power to turn the motor over. It takes ALOT more current to spin the engine than it does to power the lights. so you have two options here. Its either because your battery is no good or because the motor is locked up.

Try a jump start and report back.

That clicking is the starter solenoid trying to kick over juice to the starter to make it start turning the engine over.

I agree with the above posts that suggest dead/weak battery. That's a good starting point and it's usually free. If you jump the battery and the car still won't start, at that point I'd be checking out my starter if I were you.

Thanks all. Ok, Guess it wouldnt hurt to check the battery. Like you all said, its free, so, what do i have to lose. Could it be the starter solenoid, do you think?

Hang on now....lets get the symptoms right. First, change the F***ING battery to an Optima or a truck battery in the same footprint, but taller. Get a bad-a** battery that is way over the OEM specs. Second, make sure that the terminals/connections aren't corroded AT ALL. I mean clean, sparkly clean, inside and out. Furthermore, if you have bought your fOCUS used, check all of the above, then make sure that the grounds are solid. Finally check to make sure the previous owner hasn't "cleaned" out the battery terminal clamps too many times. If you have to tighten the nut to the point of stripping, STOP. Replace everything from clean RED/BLACK to NEW battery. Sorry for the BOLDS and all the hype, but its a simple, commonly occuring problem that costs a lot of Foci a TON of money trying to figure out a simple problem.

Joe's got Moxi, I can hand him that!

And it probably is the battery, from what it sound like. My friend's spi was doing the exact same thing--heck, the op could actually be him posting!--until he drove on out and picked up a new battery.

But, all of the other advice--checking grounds, cleaning terminals, etc.--certainly can't hurt, and should be on everyone's at least every once in a while "checklist" of underhood inspections.

    optima fan boy.

I was going to delete the post but decided against it because most of it is actually good information. Everything but the optima/"truck battery" part. (trucks use the same ****ing batteries as cars. Besides, higher CCA sacrifices longevity and there is no sense getting a battery with a higher load rate or CCA than your car can actually use)

^What about about a sailboat battery, they have loads of CCA and reserve, that should make the car go even faster than a truck battery will.

Get a giant battery if you have a giant starter motor for a high compression big displacement engine, but if you have a stock 2.0 or 2.3 liter Focus, you just need one that is equal to stock recommendation. There's even a fudge factor built in.

Just take the ****ing battery to the parts house and have it tested. Its free and you will have a starting point.

Thats exactly what my odyssey battery does when it's really cold. Doesn't have the CCA to turn the motor over, so it just clicks. Another vote for weak battery.

Exclamation Re: Car wont start, makes a clicking noise

Hello all, I am having the same issues, I have tried replacing the battery with no luck. I have tried to jump the car, and it just clicks, Took the vehicle to get the alternator check and checked out fine.

My question is could the wheel sensors have anything to do with the problem? The speedometer does not work as well, it works intermittently. my next step is to replace the starter. am at a lose here, any help would be awesome.
