    Default Axle nut size?

    Hi,

I will be replacing the passenger half shaft on my friends 2000 SE wagon. I have done the job before on other FWD cars (Taurus mostly) and was wondering what the axle nut size was for the Focus. I don't have access to the car until I need to do the work on it and would like to have all the parts/tools in hand before starting.

Is it 30mm like the Taurus? If anyone knows the correct size I would appreciate it!

    Thanks

I used a 1 1/8" bit (I believe) which worked well on the rear.

remember to torque to 197 ft lb for the axle nuts! Dont want that falling off.

Thanks guys... I will take your word on it. Couldn't find the dimensions anywhere else online. I already have a 30mm deep impact socket for breaking them loose and now I know what to calibrate my torque wrench too also!

Not to burst any bubbles, but you'll be told by someone the sig picture has to go bye-bye... FJ is very picky about the details.. (I know because I got called out for a blank line pushing my sig over the 6 line limit..)

Edit: bug beat me to it.

its a 32 i tried a 30 deep impact socket and it was too small so a 32 was what worked.

Funny because the rear for me is a 29mm. I had to go from shop to shop to finally find one. Some places told me for sure it was 30mm but that was too big.

    The Front is DEFINITELY 32mm.
    Torque is 214 ft/lbs.
See this thread for more info on the nuts themselves.

I would advise against reusing the OEM nut.
Replacements can come from a variety of vehicles, especially a few Mazdas and a couple of surprising Fords.

and make sure the threads are true!!!

i reinstalled a nut that had marred threads, and yeah, needless to say, i needed a new half-axle.

I also agree on replacing the axle nut. You can reuse it something like twice, but always safe to have a spare. Also make sure your Torque wrench will handle that high of a torque spec.

And wow, that thread sure had a lot of crap to go through just to find the size of a nut.

What kind of car are we talking here, SVT, ST, 05-07? Because i know for a fact that on my 01 ZX3 the rear is 29mm. I can prove it if you'd like.

Well, the guy who posted what you quoted has SVT in his Screenname, so...
I posted the SIZE of the nut. The link was to explain the problems and solutions regarding the OEM nuts.

ok, whats the deal? I see 3 difeerent torque specs here for the axle nut. I have also replaced the LF bearing twice, and am going for the 3rd. I have blamed this on not torqueing the new replacement bearings......I hope this is the case. Anyone have the actual service manual to confirm the torque? Thanks,
