Default I can hear my fuel pump?

Some of you may know that I installed a bunch of sound deadening/proofing material a few months ago on my car. This makes it very easy to hear things in the car I had not been able to hear previously. For the last 2 weeks or so, I have been able to hear my fuel pump. I know that's what it is because it has the characteristic fuel pump hum and sometimes you can hear it while the car is starting. Here's the kicker: the car drives fine. No symptoms of anything wrong. The only thing I can think of is maybe the fuel filter needs to be changed? Maybe the pump is working hard to push the fuel through an excessively dirty filter? It's an 02 SVT that has 102k on it and I've owned it since 91k.

Has anyone else had this problem? I didn't see any threads that addressed this particular subject.

Defiantly could be! The fuel filter is an easy swap... You're supposed to change them like every 40k I thought?

Oh I know they are an easy swap, but I won't be able to work on the car until Friday.

The previous owner meticulously maintained the car. I literally have about an inch thick stack of dealer receipts so I bet he replaced it at the regular intervals.

I was asking mainly to see if someone popped in and said that they heard their pump shortly before it died

Could also be the sock filter on the pump pickup is clogged.

I would imagine the noise quiets down if you fill up the tank? Getting any bogging going around corners w/less than 1/4 tank?

Nope, I filled up on the way to work today and it's still there. And no recall pump/tank here, this is an SVT.

Its normal to hear the pump. Some cars, like volvos, have very loud pumps. However, on other cars, like chevy trucks, a loud pump is an indicator that it is on its way out. The only way you could really be sure is to use a current clamp and labscope to see the waveform of the pump in action. Its should be a nice smooth curlycue. If its distorted, its about to go. Best advice is just to keep on driving and see what happens.

So I made an interesting discovery today. When any of my winds or doors are open, the sound stops. So now I am thinking that it's an electrical problem with feedback getting into the rear speakers somehow. I know it's not coming from the head unit because I pulled the face plate off and the sound was still there.

Do you have an amp? if so ur ground wire is mounted in the wrong spot. do u hear a winning noise while accelerating? then de-accelerating? sometimes u can hear it while idling. i've heard this before when people ground there amps wrong.

No aftermarket amp, just the stock audiophile unit. The sound does not change when the engine is revved or under accel or decel, it is held constant at all times.

I can tell this is not going to be easy to find.
