Default My car barely moves (~20km/hr) with gas pedal down

    Hi,

last night I was driving on the highway with slippery winter roads and my 2000 Ford Focus (automatic transmission) slid/spun into the side ditch. Problem now is when I start the car up and put it in drive or reverse with gas pedal(like normal city driving) down it won't move(but I could hear fuel is being fed into the engine because the engine speeds up). Now, if I push the gas pedal almost all the way down then it moves like 20-30km/hr. Any suggestions on what is wrong with it? Thanks for the help!

push the fuel pump reset located at the passenger side kick panel. there is a Gas tank icon on it, and theres a removable plastic piece with a button underneath.

thanks for your reply. But what's the point of pushing the fuel pump reset? I don't have problem starting the car. I a wondering if the transmission or something else is gone because power is not deliverying to the wheels properly.

Did you hit anything, bend anything? It sounds like the clutches aren't fully engaged and it's slipping allot. Maybe it's between gear selections... try moving the shifter a bit further back or forward from drive (like between D and 2, or D and N) to see if the trans cable bracket got bent.

Might also check the cat wasn't hit and now clogging up the exhaust. Easy way to test is try driving it and then check undr hood and see how hot the exhaust header is.

G-Force, I don't there's anything anything bend or visibly wrong. The keyless lock/unlock beeper is not nearly as loud as before though. When the guy pulled the car out of the ditch we had a quick look underneath the car everything appears to be ok. The only visible damaged was some plastic ripped off on the front bumper and a crack on the left side corner of the bumper. I think thats where it landed the hardest as the corner cracked and a lot of mud covered the corner and inside of the bumper and partially the radiator. Also, the car skidded into the ditch left side as there are a lot of muds inside both left side wheel rims. The car swung/skidded into the ditch at around 90KM/hr.

Also, if I accelerate the gas pedal and hold it long enough I smell something burning, kinda like a exploded capacitor, not totally sure.

Ok, I will try what you suggested tomorrow.

AutoXing_se, sorry, I just googled "cat" and I still don't know what do you meant by "cat". Do you have a picture of it and perhaps show me where it is so I can go and have a loook at it tomorrow. Please keep in touch with this thread and provide me more info/feedbacks. Ask me any info and questions regarding it. Thanks.

By cat he means catalytic converter. Its the 2nd piece right after the exhaust header(the 4 metal pipes coming out the front of your engine and then heading downward). When you gas it does the engine speed up and only the wheels dont turn? or is the engine also having trouble? If the engine will rev w/out much issue, it would almost surely point to a transmission problem.

    xsuicidesn0wmanx, thanks.

Yeah, when I gas it at normal city speed/pedaling the engine speeds up and the car don't move, now if I gas it harder, say at highway speed/pedaling it moves at speed 20-30KM/hr but it smells like something is burning, I don't think its oil but smells kind of like after a capacitor exploded or metal rubbing against metal. The engine runs like before the accident. If its transmission then the car is not worth fixing (2000 Focus)? Could it be a clutch problem too?

Yes, it's probably clutches burning that you smell... try my suggestion before you drive it any more the way it is now.

That, and/or take it to a shop. Something is definitely rubbing to get that burning smell.

I agree that you should take it to a shop and see what it will cost to get fixed. Trans work can be a bit pricy but that doesn't mean that whatever you need fixed will cost more than the value of the vehicle. Just out of curiosity, if you jack the car up to lift the wheels off the ground, can you turn all 4 of them manually? Like physically grab them and make them spin.

Also DO listen to G-forces and try what he said, this guy has helped me out more times than I can count!

G-Forcces: I tried your suggestion it didn't work still the same. It only starts to move at low speed if I gas it harder than city gasing. So do you think its the clutche or transmissoin? Is there a way I can test if its a clutche or transmission problem?

    xsuicidesn0wmanx:

no, I didn't try spinning the wheels when the car was lifted up. But when it was parked at the road the polices did helped me pushed it to the side of the road while the car was in neutral.
Also, I just went outside and put it on neutral again and gave it a pushed the car was rolling a bit. I think G-Forces is right its probably the clutche.

What sucks is I changed the brakes, tires, battery, spark plugs, spark plug wires and fuel filter not so long ago despite only the rocker panels are rusting away.

The slip and the burning smell you discribe point right to a clutch pack failing. How about the fluid level... has it gone down? I'm wondering if a cooler line got broke or maybe crimped. Either way it would stop the pump from being able to push enough fluid to raise pressure enough to fully engage the clutch. Take it somewhere and have the lines and everything else looked at real good.

G-Forces, As I stated in my first post my car is a automatic therefore it doesn't have a clutch only standards have them?
