i was reading through the rules for NASA Rally spec series and i noticed that they state that the D-2.0 can use the cossie intake manifold. problem im seeing is, who can program it to work , ive talked to Focus Sport and they said that they dont have a tune for it and ive asked if i could have my 2.0 tuned with the Cossie stage 2 kit installed and they said that they wouldnt recommend it. is that just because you would loose low end power or would it really run like crap. if it will run like crap then why would they say we could use them in the rules. well if anyone knows an answer i would greatly appreciate it and if its possible to use the Cossie stage two and make it run well on a rally course then i want to know how.

You might want to check with LC Racing on the 2.0L Duratec stuff. They have done some good things with it.

You might not want the cosworth intake manifold for Rally events. We use it in road racing because we can get 173whp out of it with not a lot of Tq. With a stock manifold you'll increase tq (then with a cossie) but not as much whp. That is something you'll have to play with the tune.

but with a Spec Focus Duratec Motor (with a Cosworth Intake Manifold), you get around 173whp and 128lbs Tq.

Your best bet is to call FocusSport back and ask for their reasoning. As has been mentioned, you loose quite a bit of torque running the cossie manifold, but it allows you to rev a bit higher. It trades midrange for upper RPM horsepower. You would probably want the midrange for your application.

The reasoning is: Its nearly impossible to offer a solid tune remotely.

FocusSport first does all their dyno research in-house. Since they've never tuned a Stage II Cosworth car... they don't have any data on it... so they could tune generally... but not have a spot-on tune nailed.

If he wanted to ship the car to SoCal... I'm sure Randy would tear into it!

yea if i get a chance to go back to iraq ill be set , cause then ill build up both the 2006 engine that came with the car and the 2005 engine that in the car now. im just tryin to get 220 out of one and then a beast like the FocusSport guys have made in the past. thanks for all the help guys

Why is the wagon body style barred from competition? Its not allowed in rally or regular spec....

I have a wagon I pondered rallying.

I think the reason the wagon is banned is because the rear suspension is different therefore you would need to find a suspension supplier that would build something for the maybe 1 wagon that would end up on the stages.

Also, could you even get the wagon down to the min weight?

Eibach, H&R, Intrax etc. all make springs. H&R and Bilstien make coil overs.

The only real item lacking is the rear damper - Eibach USED to make a decent rear shock, but thats been disco'd. Koni only offers their reds, which are more of a premium than sport type.... But I'd be willing to give it a whirl.

The wagon only weighs about 100 lbs more than a ZX3.

A brief google search shows these as curb weights in 2004:

Wagon: curb weight (lbs) 2,683
ZX3: curb weight (lbs) 2,593

I kinda always remember ZX3's being more like 2700 lbs, but I've always known the wags were only about 100lbs porkier. Remember, every Focus shares the identical wheel base...

Well with the new 2008 Rally Spec Focus rules are you free to use whatever spring and damper combination that you are want as long at it bolts to the car in the same locations.

And with that curb weight you should be able to get it to work.

So I don't see why you could not run a wagon. If you are serious I am pretty sure we could get a rules bulletin that allows that body style.

Well, Im going to build the car rally style one way or another. For fun/amusement/competiton/etc... So if its possible, I might as well build it to adhere to the spec rally regs then.
