Default Ok Heres the deal

My plan for my rally car is im going to buy a focus from a junkyard. Then im going to strip it to a bare shell and do some seam welding and build the cage myself. Im need to know what kind of Wall thickness, inside and outside diameter to use so i can buy a tubing bender. Also how would I go about getting a logbook for the car after i install the cage so i dont have to upgrade the cage later??

I think the tubing thickness specs are in the regulation handbook. If you don't already, I would download the Rally Spec Focus one and the general NASA rally one which goes more in depth for cage building.

I'm not sure how to get a logbook, but I think they give you one at your first rally.

You would do better to buy a ready built car. I know you are worried about expenses but a welder, bender, dies, and building an entire to car to spec is going to cost you all of the cost of buying a used car and then some. The guy selling the prepped focus is got a great deal going on. You can't build a car cheaper than what his is listed at. Maybe you should try renting a rally car instead of buying.

The log book procedure is outlined in the full NASA Rules, usually referred to as GRRs. You need to talk with an inspector about how close to a complete the car needs to be to get a log book. I am not an inspector but I think you could get a log book if you had done the following:

- Cage
- Paint for cage
- Seat mounts
- Seats
- Harness mounts, and Harnesses
- Proper FIA or SFI padding on the roll cage

How much welding experience do you have? Welding a cage is not really the best starter project that I can think of.
