Isn't the only requirement that the transponder have a clear view of the ground?

I would put it as near the front of the car as possible for that situation where you are drag racing someone to the line at the finish.

The instructions from AMB.

"The position must be identical on all cars competing in the race. Fix the transponder vertically, at a maximum of 60cm (2 ft) above the track. Make sure that the transponder has a clear view to the track with no metal or carbon fiber underneath."

We mounted ours to the front, lower grille. Works great.
