Default Water and Water Wetter? Freeze Warning

To all you guys running water and water wetter - frost warning. Reminder to change it out for antifreeze for the winter to avoid cracked blocks. That will save a frantic effort under the car in the dark draining the water when the big cold snap comes through (like I had to do on Monday night)

Or - clean out your garage so you can keep it inside and warm.

Do you have something to stop the corrosion? As much an issue as freezing

I would always use Royal Purples' Purple Ice which works for rust, corrosion and erosion.

No experience with the Purple Ice, but what I do know is that Water Wetter increases cooling by reducing the surface tension of the water against the head and coolant passages, which keeps it in better contact with the metal. The result is better cooling (more water/coolant touching the metal) and a decrease in microscopic hot spots causing "mini" boiling points --->> erosion

Also has additives to lube the water pump and prevent the seals from drying out and leaking.

THere are some really good technical articles on the product at redline's website along with real technical data of cooling effects on a test motor with varying amounts of coolant/water/water wetter. I think it's www.redlineoils.com

Cool reading if you're a techno geek ;-)

I assume that the Purple Ice functions in a similar fashion with similar results. No one seems to stock this stuff in my area - so I use W.W. as a default.

Oh - and always use distilled water! Tap water --->> full of minerals --->> bonds to aluminum --->> big erosion

Water wetter does have corrosion fighting properties. It's good stuff, but don't expect a 24 degree improvement, or whatever they claim on their website. I probably got a consistent 5 degree improvement in my truck. I guess it might do a bit better if I drop the coolant level...I still run a 50/50 mix and top off with a bottle of WW.

Purple Ice does the same thing as wetter water. http://www.royalpurple.com.au/files/...T/prpiceps.pdf

And they're both colorful and non-toxic. Put a cocktail umbrella in them, pour over ice, and you have delicious trackside beverages.

Brad, I disagree. From coolant to water is a HUGE difference. from water only to water+water wetter was a slight difference. I did some datalogging, but they're on my old laptop... but the difference was major.

In the Focus, using 50/50 coolant water, the temp hovered right around 180* on a 50* day. Drain the coolant, go to straight water (as best I could) and the temp would barely break 140*. Running when it was in the high 30s low 40s the temps were no higher than 120* and the needle on the dummy gauge would barely come off the cold.

Todd, did you read all that I wrote? I didn't make the jump from 50/50 to water+WW. I still run a mix with WW. I said I would probably see a better improvement if I took some or all of the coolant out, but it is not worth it to me on a street vehicle that does see freezing weather.
