Default Intake Manifold Part II... Throttle Body Spacer?

Really, now Ford Racing is pissing me off.

Apparently they sell a manifold that is not compatable with the stock alternator location.... great.... thanks to Mark Lapp we got that sorted. So we go to bolt on the throttle body (which, I gotta give props to Ford for not including hardware or a gasket even to mate the TB to the manifold. Way to go above and beyond guys!) and what do we find? The lever for the butterfly hits the damn manifold after you open it about 15%.

WTF?

So apparently, CFM notes on theirs that there is a spacer required to make it work.

From the Ford Racing Catalog:

Quote:
M-9424-ZX3R*

Inspired by the intake on the FR200 show car

Bolts in to stock location with all fittings and EGR

Requires M-9926-ZX3R throttle body

Increased flow makes this the best manifold available in the market for forced induction or high revving Zetec engines

Fits 2000-2004 2.0L Zetec equipped ZX3/4/5/W
and

Quote:
M-9926-ZX3R*
Designed to be used with performance manifold M-9424-ZX3R
NO FRIGGIN WHERE does it state that there is a spacer needed.... and in fact... there is not even a part number for a spacer. So what the hell Ford? Thanks for yet again, making something that doesn't work.

You'd figure, after spending $1000 on parts, they could let you know how to use them, or what parts you might need.

Oh and by the way.... Anyone wanna tell me what the exact difference between the M-9926-ZX3R and the M-9926-D462 with the exception of the labeling and the $280 price markup? Because as far as I can tell, from both what I have in my hands, and the photos in the FRPP Catalog, they're exactly the same in terms function and design....

Leo? Ted?

Right now, I'm guessing the clowns @ Ford Racing are laughing their asses off at the prices we're paying.

I have the TB and the new intake and did not have a problem? I believe the linkage is different between the 2 TB's as well as the ZX3r has the vacum nipple. The intake is definitely far from plug and play.

Here's what I'm talking about...

As mounted, throttle closed:

And open as much as it will:

The box it came in:

The engineering number:

And the ford racing picture of the Mustang throttle body that MSRPs for less than $200.00 (same engineering number!):

My TB is different from yours and the one pictured? The linkage seems to be backwards on the part you have, did it come with a bracket to mount the throttle cable. See "The Rotten Cherry" thread below for photos of my intake.

Welcome to the world of improving one's car... nothing is ever perfect and there's always some unforseen need to fab, alter or destroy something else along the way.

Although I may have not given the impression, you do indeed have my sympathy.

I need to get out there and see how this project of yours has progressed.

I think that this is the wrong throttle body. Ours doesn't look like that. The linkage is different and it has a tube sticking out the front of it. You do need this tube. It connects to the hose that is directly above the IAC. Like you said, the stock TB has this bypass built into it, the 70mm doesn't.

You may be able to make that one work, but it is the wrong one. The engineering number on ours is the same except it doesn't have the -AA.

Looks like I gotta call the great guys @ Tech Line.

Again.

Better take my invoice to work so I can fax it.

Again.

The good news is that the car got out of the garage today. Man these things are EASY to push around when they don't have any engine/transmission/interior in them. Well I guess thats not true, the transmission was in... just in the spare tire well.

I would start with the company you purchased it from and they should take care of it.

Todd,

I think that is the wrong Throttle Body. Even the box looks like it was repackaged

I would ask them what they can do. I know that a Ford Racing Focus TB doesn’t need a spacer for the FRPP Manifold. So, I think you have a Mustang TB. I would ask Tousley if they can order you another one and return the one you have for credit.

Wanna thank Leo for getting me the correct part today. I'd venture a guess that, much like what happened to my brake kit.... Someone @ FRPP put the wrong part in the box, and/or the wrong label on the box. Either way, now I've gotta find some bolts and some gaskets (really, I mean really? Can't throw us some hardware FR????)

Thanks Leo! Now we can finally get around to firing her up!

Good to hear. You can use Felpro 61050 for the gasket. It's only about $2.00.

You beat me too it, Mark. I was going to say that Summit Racing has it for $0.95.

Todd, the cheaper Ford throttle body doesn't have the TPS adapter and doesn't have the throttle linkage bracket.
