This dissusion is good to have, but is this an option? If we race with NASA in a "Spec" class, are the RA1's manditory? Their statement sounds like they are.

That's what we're here for. To find out what we think is best for us.

I'll bow out of this conversation after realizing, that NASA as an organization will likely tell all 8 or so of us Spec Focus "racers" to pound sand, shaddup and use the RA1s.

I'll admit that they're a good tire. But I don't necessarily think they're the best. Personally, I've preferred Hankook's performance, and I know I can get Nittos at a better price than Toyos, which is why I would suggest an open tire rule would be ideal. Run what you prefer so long as the OD doesn't change, and the treadwear isn't too low. But like I said, its not like we're the largest contingent in NASA's basket.... I doubt that they'll wanna tell the $$$$ that be @ Toyo that this little gnat says they're not gonna run your tire.

It is what it is.

Oh and Mark... I'm just waiting on a new transmission, since Clint blew up his diff, and I gave him mine.

Or Todd... It could be that we don't buy enough Toyo tires to make a difference. It could work both ways

If we did open the tire rule and mandate the treadwear. Where do we stop it at. Because BFG R1, Hankook Z214,Hoosier R6 & A6, and Kumho V710 are all 40 treadwear or less.

Yokohama ADVAN A048 is a 215/45R17 with a treadwear of 87, but they are not cheap.

Pirelli PZero Corsa comes in 225/45ZR17 and are 60 treadwear.

I currently have a set of 225/45 17 bfg r comp in my car (my free autoX tire setup...) and it fits in the front with the new springs. I will be in a track day in PUtnam at the end of the month if anyone wants to see the tire. I can also take measurements if you guys want.

No need to measure it, just run them and see how they do.

It looks like Toyo is not going to bring back the RA1 in our sizes anyways. We might be going with an open tire anyways.

I assume "Open" comes with restrictions (size, wear rating etc.).

Will NASA have anything to say about this? Do we have that option since Spec Focus is a "Spec" class?

I already talked to NASA about this and this where I got the info from.

Leo and I have already started to talked about it. We'll have a set size anyways because we have spec wheels. We'll most likely have a set treadwear as well.

A quick report the old, dry 225/45/17 seemed to grip as good as the old, dry 235/40/17. The most noticeable difference was just the change in gearing (tire diameter difference). Like you guys said I bet i'm not using the full contact patch of the 235 and that is why it feels like the 235...
