Default 3000 rpm and nowhere togo Auto Tranny

Been noticing that when the Auto tranny shifts from 1st to 2nd that sometimes
it will rev up to 3000 rpm but feels like
its in neutral and doesnt move anywhere.
After a brief moment it will then engage and continue to move. Anyone else had this happen or know of this being an issue?
I did search back 60 days here but didnt see anything simular.

Same problem here. Doesn't happen often. I heard some rumblings about this possibly being another recall, but have no official word.

My car used to do that, took it to the dealer and they replaced the transaxle, now there's no problem. It took them about 3 days to complete.

focifrost, do you have the slipping noise like I have? I am still wondering what is wrong with mine.

I've never had that happen, but maybe you moved the shifter down too far. Instead of putting it on D, you might have brought it down to 1 or 2. I did that once and it was reving at 3000 or so and I barely moving.

That transmission slippage has happened 2-3 times to me. First time it sounded like I did a neutral slam on it. I was accelerating from around 10mph and revved to around 4,000 before it engaged. The other times were just in normal driving. Almost like I bumped the gear to neutral for a split second. I had the dealer look at it to no avail. We'll have to keep an eye on this. It is too common to be a rare occurence.

ZXIII,
What do you mean by slipping noise? My car would feel like it was in neutral then finally shift. The only noise would be the reving over 3500 rpm.

Sound almost like a tire burn out, of course not as loud as that. I always thought it was really a burn out with my sucky stock "firecrap" tires, but noise is still there after I replaced it with new tires. That's how I found out something is wrong.

I have the similar problem with my ZX3 as well. However, it only happens sometime. Basically, when I slow down enough to almost have a rolling start (5-10 mph to whatever), the engine will rev up but the car won't go anywhere. After a breif second or two, a surge of power will kick in and pull the car ahead like someone hit me from behind. I am not sure what the heck this problem is. I think the tranny is a bit too slow to react to this kind of change?

Yeah, me too. My ZX3 has about 2300 miles on it and the transmission slipping problem has happened at least twice. Just like someone above posted - it was like i was coasting at about 5 or 10 mph and then hit the gas and like nothing happened for a brief period of time. Then it caught and took off. Weird - like being in the Twilight Zone!

I think many people, including me, has the same problem. It become so common that I alsmot feel like there should be a recall for our auto tranny on this

I have the same thing happen to mine on rare occasions, but it seems to happen early on cold mornings, before the trans. has managed to warm up completely.

They will replace the transaxle assembly.

They won't replace a transaxle unless you can prove something is wrong. I've had my 2001 ZX3 to the dealer and they have seen no problem with the car and of course it doesn't do it for them.

I don't think there is anything mechnically wrong with the tranny. However, I think it's more or less a design flaw than anything else.

I think the tranny's reaction time is just too slow. Newer cars from the 90s has auto tranny with "Fuzzy Logic" feature to further improve overall comfort of the car. Think about it, if the car have locked torque converter, the car will jump ahead like a train hit you from behind everytime it shifts. In order to prevent that, the tranny allows the torque converter to slip a bit before totally lock on.

Anyways, I guess the programing in the ECU which control the lockup and a bit screwy. I don't think replacing the transaxles or the whole tranny itself or solve anything. However, Ford can reinvent the damn program that control the tranny to make this problem to go away. What are the chance of that happening? All I can say is, don't hold your breath..
