Default why does you trans knock - by ford

dear bla bla bla

We have been tracking and evaluating concerns of neurtal gear rollover noise in the mtx- 75 transmission. The clicking /cllater noise produced is the result of power impulses from the engine travelling through the input shaft of the trasmission, which is not under load due to neutral, and applying those pulses to a set(s) of idle gears. The gears producing the noise are not being damaged due to the lack of load on them. Thus if you depress the clutch pedal, which interrrupts power flow from engine, or apply load to the output shaft the concern is gone or the back lash no longer exists with the gear set. Therefore, this condition is not damaging to the powertrain. At this time the concern is being evaluated as a customer dislikes or annoyances with possible future action to be taken.

sincerely,
james tomaso f .s.e

And they are doing what about it? NOTHING! If they were to make the trans right then there would'nt be a noise to speak of. I think Ford knew of the prob with the trans but figured, it was to much money to redesign the whole thing just for a "noise", that only some would complain about. My wifes VW GTI doesn't make the 'noise' nor did my older Toyota celica. But my Focus does. If it is getting what you pay for then I wonder why the KIA Rio doesn't make the 'NOISE'!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Still doesn't explain all the noise while the car is moving.

I don't quite understand.

This is the SAME MTX75 as used in the SVT Contour... I have never heard a 'Tour owner complain of this before, and never driven one that makes this sound. I can INDUCE this sound on mine if I push the stick slightly in gear a couple times w/o depressing the clutch, but I still have to get out of the car to hear it. So I guess its a tolerance issue. Perhaps as my car gets older (around 50,000 or so) this will become more pronounced.

But again, I've seen tons of high mileage Contours and Cougars with the same transmission and yet no reports of any noise. What gives? Is it because they are using smoother V6 engines?
