Yes, it is normal because the rotor is just bare metal.
If you are going to show your car off to friends, just ride the brakes a little before you get there and the pads will scrape the thin film of rust off. Don't worry about it; it's normal. |

Rust on rotors is normal. Our Foci have nice wide-open wheel designs, which simultaneously make the problem worse (more water gets to the rotors) and more noticable (you can see the greater amount of rust through the wide-open wheels.)
The rust is a very thin layer, and is generally ground off within the first couple of minutes of driving. As Bobby indicated, a purely cosmetic problem. ------------------ -Jon 2k ZX3, Infra-red, auto, air, cruise, tilt, pw/pl/pm, abs, var. int. wiper conversion, Sylvania XV headlights IM: JonBoy470 |

You can paint the calipers with High Temp paint (like BBQ paint), anything else will burn off. But don't paint the rotors. Or rather don't paint the friction surface of the rotors, the part that touches the pads.

jmdavid, I'm curious... what kind of car were you driving that had no disk brakes? I haven't seen a car with drum brakes up front in years!
