Mine locked this weekend at my brother's house the first time. Twenty minutes of pounding on the steering column I got the key to turn. When I got to my parent's house, locked up. Would not turn again. Repair costs with towing. $380.

Add me to the list. I have to go rescue the wife now.
Epilogue: I whacked it pretty hard with a mallet, and it worked. Now I have to check if my extended warranty will cover it.

I swapped mine out today w/out a hitch thanks to j2000's "New Ignition Cylinder" thread:
http://forums.focaljet.com/team-tech...nder-help.html I used a rubber mallet to free it up. I took my siezed cylinder apart making note of the the tumbler numbers and their orientation, which made setting the tumblers in the new cylinder a breeze. Total cost was 61.99+tax I callled a few stealership's parts depts and was quoted b/t $90.76 and $97.76+tax for the very same Motorcraft cylinder I bought at O'Reilly... rediculous. Mine replaced under warranty.Dealer says never seen a replaced one fail.Hope he's right.I won't take it back to dealer for repair if it happens again. If you tap the end of the key until it turns it will continue to work forever if you don't remove the key. So,if it does lock up the first time you should be able to tap it until it turns and keep using the car until you decide what to do.Just cover the steering column with towel and use other key or remote keyless to get into car.

Yeah... My ignition has locked up too. I can't remember how much I had to pay but repairs plus towing was about $500! Sad thing is, the guy that towed me said that he had towed 6 other Focuses in the past several weeks due to the same issue!!! At the dealership they were able to tell me the repair cost instantly because they had fixed so many they didn't have to even estimate it. That's just wrong. I'm guessing my car's milage was at approx 43,000 at the time. Too soon for that kind of a problem if you ask me. Add my name to whatever list you need to if it means all us Focus owners can recoup our losses. |

Add me to the list.
I have a 2000 with 103000 miles on it, so I guess I'm kinda lucky. The new ign cost me about $96 bucks and I had to drill out the old one, about an hour labor. The new part feels much better.

mine still working flawless after my ghetto fix on page.... oh i dont remember, just search this thread for my username
just want to remind people if you cant drop the jack for the new part or labor you can always rectify the issue yourself with no risk to security and actually its nice being able to pull my key out whenever i want the car does not die after you pull the key away from the PATS either, i was wondering if that would happen but it didnt

Got me for the third time two days ago. I'm good enough to change it however regardless of how much I hit it, I can't get it to roll forward to change it out...
![]() Anways, first 2 times it was under warranty, going to see how much it's gonna cost me this time. Also note the name... yes now I drive a Scion. |

Bit of luck with this actually, Because mine had already been done twice, I wasn't able to push the button to get the key cylinder out. So I had to drill it out... and guess what? Whatever I did fixed it, I turned it over/took key all the way out 20 times and it works like a champ. I'm sure it's not a permanent fix, but it should get me until payday at least

I used a hammer and while hitting the key inward and twisting it usually comes unlocked been like this for months now.... only have to do it when I forget to leave the key in the ignition... dealler quoted me 116 just for the ignition part..... well see if I do it

mine happened around 40k too, left me stranded at work saturday night at midnight. I was able to drill out the old lock cylinder, but forget trying to get the correct sequence to assemable the new lock cylinder was impossible. When I did get the correct sequence (or so I thought) I couldn't get it back together correctly. So they hit me for another $50 just to assemble the lock cylinder. So I'm into it for $150 and had to do most of the work myself!!!
