Nuala7,
your car is a month old! Take it to another dealer and they will fix it for you. In no way should you be without your car. It is a no brainer. Just take it in and get it fixed for FREE. Just be calm.

I had this happen in my gaurage. It took all day to drill out and there were metal shavings all over the place. It costs $250. It was in a guarage w/ the wheels not straight, and w/out the key the steering wheel was locked, so I had to get someone to drill it out at my house.

I never had my ignition lock up like you all are describing. only thing close to it being lock up was when the wheels were under tension and the steering wheel is turned and locking pin sets in. if you put the key in then and try to turn, it will not turn.. thats the closest i've been to a locked Key. I just turn the wheel both ways to find the spot where it doesn't rest on the locking pin and the key will turn easily. My thoughts on this is maybe that was a issue at the time some of you thought your keys were locked in place and tried forcing a lil harder on the key mechanism. Thus Jamming the steering wheels locking pin. and having to replace it.. I say if it happens again. try opening the top of the steering column and tap the key cylinder with an object while trying to turn the steering wheel both ways, and hope the pin will fall back to its original place.

twice my 04 zx3 has locked up on me, where it wont turn at all, but so far just taking the key in and out a few times will let it work again, and no the steering wheel was not locked when this happened so that cant be the reason

Ford updated the cylinder design for 05. It fits all previous year focus as well. The parts listings at the dealer are updated too. I personally have built 2 of this new style cylinder and over 10 of the old stlye, and i think they've got a much much better design with this new one. The only problem is that it doesn't look as pretty where you stick the key.

Yep add me to the list.
I have AAA so it cost me only $100 but it's a major hassle. check my other post for the correct part number. |

I'm gonna have mine replaced on monday, as tonight is the 3rd time it has locked up on me. I have been able to play around with it and get it to work, but tonight it took me 10 minutes to get it to work.

Make sure to have them install part number 5S4Z-11582-BB
that is the new and improved style that is not supposed to jam up. |

My ignition cylinder has gone bad TWICE!!! The first time it cost about $280 but the second time was free since the part had a 1 year DEALERSHIP warranty. I hope this never happens again...But i know it will.

Hi all, just replaced my ignition (myself) this morning. Thanks to FJ for the good instructions. Drilling it out isn't that bad, you just need to be careful and have patience. Took me close to 2hrs for the whole thing.
Ok, the latest Part Number for the Cylinder Kit is: 5S4Z-11582-BB. The cost (in Albuquerque, NM) was $99.xx. Figure $100. I didn't get a firm quote from ford, but as mine needed to be drilled out, I'm figuring it would've been about $250 (with towing and all). So there you go. Good luck to anyone that tries this, and if you need any advice, shoot me a PM or an email and I'll try to help out. Thanks shawzam |

Actually part number 5s4z.11582.bb retails for $86.38
You may have gotten slightly ripped off. Dealership parts departments like to set their own prices. |

Add me to the list. I had my ignition go out in Aug of 04 @ 50,000 miles. Now at 60,000 it just did it again. WTF. Next time I'm hot wiring the damn thing and using a switch or a button!! Or I'll sell it and get a WRX STI.
