I found it. Go to a locksmith who deals with cars and tell him you want to change out your ignition cylinder with Strattec part #707592. The locksmith I went to said he could file down the old cylinder so that metal rod doesn't stick out anymore and jam it but I didn't care to mess with it. I just had him change out the whole cylinder with the Strattec part. Incidently the Strattec part doesn't even have anything that could possibly cause the cylinder to lock up anymore like the POS ford part. I consider this a permanent fix. |

If mines kinda gets stuck once in a while and I have to pop it out with my finger, does this mean mines is gonna lock up soon? I hope not...

temporary fix by lubing up the key putting it in and out of the key slot, then banging it into the keyhole with alittle bit of force, it got the tumbles loose and i was able to turn the key. Now i need to find out a way to completely remove the lock cylinder and replace it with a bunch of switches.

oh man, i just had the thought in my head of a series of 10 rocker switches that you have to have in a certain order (think DIP switch) before the car will start
![]() that would be kinda cool actually ![]()

it would be just like a race car. I called a guy i know that works in the Sunnyvale CA, ford dealership. I have an 2003 w/ 28k miles, he said not to worry and im still covered under warranty. He told me that he'll talk to the technician if they try to give me crap about having to pay $280-$300 for a replacement.

Mine is locked up in my driveway now!!(just glad it's not somewhere else) I was going to attempt replacing it myself but since I cannot get the key to turn I can't hit the pin to pull it out. Guess i'll try busting out the lube!!
Used to like ford's but this Focus has been nothin but problems. |

had it happen a to me few weeks back, cost me $160 for a locksmith to rekey the new lock cylinder to my key, ford had quoted me $500+ plus towing .. the locksmith had also told me that this new ignition cylinder is of different manufacturer and will not fail me again.. so far its been much better than the 06 focus cylinder i have used so i believe that this aftermarket unit that is far superior to fords OEM design , remeber to check out locksmiths if you are ever in this situation...

Happened to me a couple weeks back at 190,000kms.... Wasnt too upset since i could always get the key to work after 2min of trying (with WD-40)
But please people.... do not pay to have this done... it is extremely easy to repair. There is a post on here with a how-to for getting the cylinder out and there are instructions in the box the part comes in... you need minimal mechanical skills and grade 3 math to fix it. SUPER SIMPLE

Yesm my ignition went out at 50,000 miles, and cost $250 at the dealership. It is about to go out again, too, as it dragged enough to destroy the starter motor (80,000 miles), and if I had not had a friend of mine do the work at his own shop, the bill would have been a lot more than the $360 he charged. It probably would have been my fault at the dealer, as well, for damaging the starter.
I hope to get some serious mileage out of this car, and I own a lot of Fords, and have always had one as a daily driver, as well as the current older stuff I own. My brand loyalty may soon go away, though, if Ford doesn't offer some sort of help or apology for this. Think of the kids that are buying their first cars and get stuck with these types of problems. Its enough to make me think of selling off some Ford stock. As it is, I may think of a Toyota... |

I have a 2001 Focus SE. This has happened to me twice within the last 3 months. First time, AAA came out and the gentleman knew exactly what I was talking about; stating they get calls on this problem all the time.
The second time happened to me today. I called the nearby Ford Dealer to see if there has been a recall and I was told there was not. Then I asked what the cost would be to repair it and I about fell over when he said $399. I had my car towed to a friend's workplace and went to a couple automotive places thinking I could have my friend replace it for me. I could not even find a automotive place that carried the ignition cylinder; I was told it was a dealer only item. |

Mine (zx3 2001) locked Christmas time as we were traveling to see the family. Was not funny (cold wather). Called tow truck twice each time the service person spend 1/2 h and finally got it to start but ath the dealer thay could start it to move into the service area...so they had to work in the cold outside. Paid around $300 (my Extended Warranty did not cover it).

I had the same problrm today. It is so annoying. I can see why Ford is going bankrupt. Losers!!
The deelership is asking 470 dollars and 4 hours. A private mechanic tell me 270 and 2 hours. Man I hate being victimised! |
