Default No Fire, No Spark, No codes, No idea! Help!

Hi,

My girlfriend's 03 Focus ZTS 5spd, stalled out on her this weekend in traffic, and would not start.

Here's what I've done:
-The engine turns over freely, but no spark coming from the coil.
-Had the coil tested by a ford mechanic, says it works fine, but has a couple cracks and should be replaced. I picked up a functional used coil for testing, but nothing coming from it either
-Used a multimeter to check voltage from the harness plug into the coil pack. No voltage from all 3 wires when engine is being turned over
-Used a SnapOn scan tool to scan, came up with P1000 and P1709 codes. The 1000 is a nothing code I think, and the 1709 is a CPP/EPM code. Since the car turns over fine, I can't see there being an issue with the clutch switch (CPP)

SO, I am totally lost, not sure where to go from here. I would greatly appreciate any advice or recommendations. I hate the dealership and the girlfriend doesnt make a lot of money so I'm hoping to figure this out on my own. Thanks a lot

I will consult the service manual, which motor do you have?

Sorry for not looking back at this post sooner. 1st thing is to unplug the neutral safety switch and run a piece of wire or a staple across the connectors on the pigtail and then check for spark. 2nd, check all ign. fuses underhood and in the interior. It calls to check another manual that I do not have for relay checks, sorry about that part. If everything is fine there and still no spark then, check timing belt make sure it hasn't snapped. Then do a continuity check of the cam sensor and the oil pressure sensor. After that you are on your own. That is it for the diagnostics from the Ford service manual.

I had the timing belt cover off before, forgot to mention that, to check, and the belt is fine.

Is the neutral safety switch located on the transmission housing where the shift cable enters? If I short the connectors on the pigtail, it should allow spark from the coil?

All the fuses are good, and I checked the ignition relay by swapping it with another 4 prong, but I'm not sure about the smaller relays.

How do I do a continuity check on cam and oil sensors? Just use a multimeter to check resistances?

Thanks very much for your help.

I've been doing some reading and it sounds like Neutral Safety and Clutch Position Sensors are typical problems with these cars. My question is, if the clutch sensor is defective, will the car even turn over? My problem is with spark as opposed to starting.

Well the P1000 code is actually the code for OBD (On Board Diagnostic) System Readiness Test Not Complete , which the causes for this are usually..

Vehicle is new from the factory.
Battery or PCM had recently been disconnected.
An OBD monitor failure had occurred before completion of an OBD drive cycle.
PCM DTCs have recently been cleared with a scan tool.
PTO circuit is shorted to VPWR or B+ or PTO is on during testing.

The code P1709 is the neutral switch which is part number YS4Z11A152AB($17.93) w/o cruise control or F5RZ11A152A($20.36) with CC.

I talked to the tech here and he said that if the switch is bad then the car can turn over( depends on the model and when it was built) but will never start due to the iginition system being disabled.

Alrite,

So I gave up and took it to a shop, where 150 dollars later they told me it was the crank sensor. So I bought a sensor for a third what the mechanic wanted for it (plus an hour labor) and did it myself. For reasons I can not explain, it appears the flywheel must have a bent tooth that is banging up against the sensor. So I added a lock washer to the sensor, and ran a thick bead of silicone between the sensor and block. Voila, the car runs like a champ. I realize that this is a duct-tape fix and ignores the flywheel issue, but I am tired of dealing with this car, so I guess I'll move on to the next issue and see what happens. Thanks for your help.
