Red face drip drop flood fan go. oh, no.

Hey folks, question for the lot of ya:

I've bought a '00 ZX3 that seems to have had that pesky water-in-the-passenger-footwell issue going on for a long time without being addressed. This has resulted in the blower motor making squeaking noises when it's turned on, and I'm replacing/sealing the cowl and all, but more importantly the fan only works at seemingly random speeds.

Meaning, right now it only works on speed 3, but it'll work on speed 2 if I push in the knob a bit. Forget about speeds 1 and 4. However, last month it would only work on speed 4 with no love for anything else whatsoever. Sometimes recirculate won't work, either. Right now it seems to be okay with functioning.

I believe I'm pretty aware of the different components involved in the repair (cowl, seal, new air filter, blower motor, resistor pack, switch, and dash control) however, I'm not quite sure if I should be replacing all of these or just some of them. I'm not a real pro diagnostician, but I have checked out the archives on here and other sites, and everyone seems to solve their problem with a different combination of replacements.... yet, and perhaps it's just how I'm reading it, the symptoms seem to be all muddled together.

What I want to avoid is (kinda obviously) ordering parts I don't need, and by the same token replacing parts that'll only solve half or none of the problem.

Suggestions? Comments? Any help is greatly appreciated.
