double clutch shifting

I've heard it before and I don't think I understand what it is all about.

Re: double clutch shifting

I asked this same question awhile ago, so if you do a search for it you should find the answers. Basically it's just:

Clutch in
Shift to neutral
Clutch out
Blip throttle to RPM you will be at in new gear
Clutch in
Downshift
Clutch out
More throttle! http://www.teamfocaljet.com/ubb/images/icons/smile.gif

Re: double clutch shifting

This is mainly used fr OTR trucks hauling big loads, as it helps the syncronizers to mesh easier when shifting, unlike RPM shifting.

Re: double clutch shifting

yea but in the Fast and the Furious the talk about it and I heard it on speedvision and stuff. I don't understand why you would need to.

Re: double clutch shifting

Bonduraunt in his book on driving talks about double clutching down shifts. The mention in TFF was kind of weird, I loved hearing hollywood say "double clutching", but I would not think it would be used in drag racing. In road racing, it can be done with heel/toe downshifting to match tranny speed with engine speed. I heel and toe each down shift, but I think double clutching takes too long, and I am not that good of a driver to start trying, yet.

Re: double clutch shifting

YEah, in F&F, they were talking about double clutching on UPSHIFTS? I was a little wondering what that was about! HELLA slow if you want to double clutch on up shifts. Anyways, Can you explain the whole heal toe, I try to visualise it, but I need to know what steps I should do in what order, to be able to do this! I tried to do this with my shoes I wear to go clubbing! hahaha YEAH RIGHT!

Re: double clutch shifting

Jays,
Here is how I heel and toe downshift, which differs slightly from the way the Bonduraunt books explains it. When downshifting and braking, I take my right foot and place the left side of it (ball of your foot) on the very edge of the brake pedal and begin to apply pressure. As the speeds drops, I push in the clutch with my left foot, and with it pressed in, I rotate my right foot(still braking) and apply throttle using the little toe end of your foot. When the proper RPM is matched with the gear and the car, I let out the clutch. This allows you to operate all three pedals at the same time, and preform perfect downshifts without upsetting the balance of the car. You will need aftermarked pedal pads (surprise! they are for something more than looks) and a decent pair of shoes. I find that Vans or Airwalks are good for spirited driving. Boots and dress shoes will not work. I have been doing this trick since I put my 5-speed in my Mustang in high school. People think you are talented when you downshift without the car jerking around.
If you have any more questions, just let me know. I am not an expert, but I will try to help.

True that. I did a perfect 5->2 double clutch downshift at about 60kph the other day with a passenger in the car who had just bought a manual car a few weeks back and was just learning. She is now bugging me for driving lessons.... http://www.focaljet.com/ubb/images/icons/blush.gif

Re: double clutch shifting

I think What they where talking about in the
Movie is a move that street racers use, to help the car launch again while already driving.I would use it on my turbo car to get
the turbo spooling and get the rpm's where i wanted then dump the clutch the car would launch while i was at speed -spin the tires
on the freeway at 60 mph-very impressive bad for your clucth-used only in desperate situations to get your turbo moving.
Here goes - say your in 4th gear @ 3000 rpm
and you want to get moving in a hurry.
depress the clucth - rev to where you want to be - say 6000 rpm's then dump the clutch.
it feels like it works
but nothings faster than
working thru the gears!

actually this is cmmonly referd to as side stepping the clutch, I don't remember the movie that well, but they didn't seem to know what they where talking about through most of the movie so it might have been that. http://www.focaljet.com/ubb/images/icons/grin.gif

None of the technical terminology in the F&F was correct.

To bad i didn't get to see those sweet rides
with all there wonderfully tack a$$ stickers
There always filming here i just don't know what.
by the way; the street racers refer to side steping the clutch as double clutching
i don't know why

Re: double clutch shifting

Just to add my $0.02 worth, you can double clutch an upshift. It is the same as downshift except instead of blipping the gas, you let the revs fall. As SCC pointed out though, the Focus don't like either because the Rev's don't fall like they should to jump up like they should. According to them a Focussport freewheel helps which is why I am saving up for labor. :-)

Your car looks nice. BUT, do you race it? I mean real racing, not stoplight - to - stoplight crap.

Jimmy,
I get the point you're trying to make in your sig, and I feel the same way EXACTLY.
However, it reads like part of your post to me, and might have some newbies trying to answer you in their responses???LOL
Just my 2cents. It's cool enough anyway, I just had to do a double-take to realize it was your sig. Maybe a re-wording??? NOOO offense intended, I'm right there w/ you man.

Eh, I will take that under consideration, but if it gets a newbie to try REAL racing then I did my job.
