actually...With 3 trannys taken apart now, 2 of which are sitting outside my front porch, There's only 4 divots for the rod that's connector to the selector switch to fall into. park | reverse | drive and neutral. as for 1st and second gear? I have no clue! If you look at the electrical selector switch as well, there's only positions for the microswitch to fall into as well. Here's the wierd part...When I went to my old tranny AND the one in my storage, I tqed the nut down hard and then went through all the positions. I only got 4 on each one but with the tranny in the car, I was able to get all 6 positions!!! not sure what kind of sense that makes but...
Rally's comment about the benchseat had me rolling lol. *EDIT* before somethings said, 2 of the tranny's are broken down. One is almost completely broken down with no bellhousing on and only the diff gears and the main inside clutches are still inside the drum. The input shaft and the reverse drum is out and the valvebody is out as well. The other just has the oil pan off of it, which has a hole in it and I think some reshaping of the hole abit and some JBweld will fix that?

Yeah, there are actually only three different hydraulic circuit selections with the manual valve. P/N (uses the same), R,D (includes manual 1st and 2nd).

So to make your $20 button setup work, you would still need the manual shifter to go shift from P,R,D. But it would work and all you need to do is splice into the transmission range sensor.
Once in drive you can use switches to change from 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and OD. It will shift just like using the shifter, but you have your neat buttons ![]() Here you go, should be simple enough: ![]()

Good job, Rally!
Now that I recall, Marcy once said he could do this (in theory) and use the speed control/cruise control buttons onthe steering wheel. I thought at the time, "neat" but when back in the car I discovered that ergonomincally it wouldn't work that well. You've seen those small, round yellow buttons on some MOMO steering wheels? Mount those on the backside of the 3 o'clock and 6 o'clock spokes of the Focus wheel and shift with the middle digits FTW. ![]()

Naw, they'd be mounted on the front, thumb accessible...don't need to be looking for the hiding shift button when I pull out onto the street, see I'm next to a cop, and am holding 5,500 rpm

^ Whatever you like, but if you've ever spent any time at all with steering wheel paddle shift, you'd remember that it's much easier shifting with the fingers than it would be with the thumbs.
Unless, of course, one is "all thumbs". Rofl. Had to...

you aint from the gameboy generation chief. ![]() i use my right foot on the accelerator for accelerating. i use cruise to stay at teh speed limit. then- the left 1/4 of my right foot hovers over the brake after a quick left thumb-right thumb combo. decreases braking reaction times, saves fuel and tickets. depending on how i rotate my knee i have acess to full brakes or if i toss my knee right my foot slips off the pedal and slaps the gass if i need to clear something its the only way i drive. would i like the buttons to be shifters? no. thats the point of automatic transmissions. they adapt, even if i do whine about them you can train them. i am all about options, but i bought an auto because i dont want to deal with shifting. its uphill in the snow 3 miles both ways with a manual. (granted i can if i want with the button, or 2 for snow or whatever) but the info in this thread is very informative. if you arent happy with the shifting and want to build something - its just a sign you gotta pull the battery cable and drive it till it does like you want it (usually a tank of gas worth). i tell ya. |
